Henderson - Carrick
Johnson/Jones - Richards
Carroll - anyone/Holt/Graham (and if he made the squad, wouldn't be my first choice striker)
Kelly - Ferdinand
Gerrard/Milner/Parker - Sinclair/Britton/Osman

If Hodgson had reached out personally to both Richards and Carrick and assured them an important role in the squad - which they both deserve - then I'm sure they would have accepted.

you just anti pool of course. we just waiting for Hodgson to tell Terry to fak off and then bring Carragher back. all united's players are not special either. i would have them on standby

Grown ups are talking here.

looks like i'm getting under your skin. shame man, cannot stand that pool players gets picked ahead of Rio and Carrick

Yeah, I don't agree with not picking Gerrard. He might not be the force he once was, but he is certainly among the top talents in the country still. Milner is part and parcel of an EPL winning side and should be in the squad. However, how Downing made it past Sinclair and Johnson is totally beyond me though Johnson didn't get as much game time as he did.

In his prime he was excellent, but based on this season he should never have made that squad. There were far more deserving players of that berth in the squad.

Milner doesn't offer much through the midfield, but he's a typical hardworking battler, which explains why he was used sparingly in the City squad. As a winger he's deadweight, except for helping out the fullback.

Carrick and Richards ruled themselves out, they wanted to be first pick or nothing. I really don't think a manager should have to go out of his way to invite players to come play.

Carroll - agree, not sure why he is going.

Kelly/Ferdinand - Roy can't take both Rio and Terry (because Terry + Anton saga) so he picked Terry. Didn't SAF say sometime ago that Rio's back can't handle him playing a game every 3/4 days? I could be completely wrong, I need to google that.

Gerrard - agree, he is too injury prone and not nearly as good as he used to be. Milner is decent I'd take him, and Parker is overrated. Have no idea why Britton got overlooked. Probably because he plays for a "small" club.

As I said before, I don't support England, so I don't have much invested in this. As for hoping that Carrick/Rio made that squad - yeah right. Rio's age and back problems are suited to a restful summer, and Carrick played a buttload of games for United this season so I'm glad he has the time off. My input into this conversation is who I would have chosen, not who I want to see there.

As for the Liverpool lads in the England team, I look forward to the readymade excuse of "Oh our players didn't get any time to rest for the new season" when Liverpool are sh|te as usual next season.

ok, lets leave the banter for another day. only time will tell if Hodgson decisions will backfire on him. lets hope England can reach the quater-finals at least.

When Hodgson's job rests on results, I'd say he should try every available avenue. Carrick has been getting picked for squads for years and not even being brought on as a substitute. I think anyone would get fed up with that kind of treatment, considering he's been one of the best performing English central midfielders in the past few years. It's basically Scholes all over again.

Carroll - agree, not sure why he is going.

The thing is, I can kind of see why he's going. If Roy needs to, Route 1 is available (though they could have picked Holt for this too). It's just that he wouldn't be an automatic starter for me, mainly a sub.

No, you're right. But why pick Terry? Rio's a far better defender and he's a very capable ball-playing CB, which England need. Not to mention there's always the chance EBJT will do something idiotic.

Osman too. And as a Liverpool supporter, I'd think you'd want Gerrard at home with his feet up for a while, ready for next season.

There was no 'banter' til you started :)

It depends. They can certainly progress from the Group Stages, but it has to be with a very solid defence as they don't have much going forward. Walcott/Ox haven't operated in a 4-4-2 much, which is Hodgson's only style of play, it seems, as while Young can operate on the left and penetrate, it'll rest on Carroll's form to convert those chances. Gonna be intriguing.

Fair enough, Carrick should be going, he had a really good season.

Don't need to say much about Carroll, I agree with you there.

I think I would've picked Rio (if his back is ok), They are both about the same age, and neither of them are that quick (anymore). Does Rio play on the Left of the Right at CB? Terry and Lescott both prefer the left which another bit of a fail. If Rio plays on the right, then even more reason he should be going.

Yeah, I'd prefer if Gerrard just retired from England so he can give what he has left to Liverpool.

Rio is right CB...

I would have picked Couch over Carroll...

Carrick does not want the bit part roll he was gonna get. Good thing his not going, now for Young to pull up on the first match so he can also return home and put on some muscle

Young was unlucky with injuries last season. Hope he doesn't get injured while playing for England. If he can stay healthy he'll be a huge asset for United.

I'd pick Carroll over Crouch any day of the week.

Crouch has more goals in less games this season than Carroll. He's also a better all-round ball player.

I just said I'd pick Carroll, who cares if Crouch scores more goals :P I like Big Andy :D

Name - Games/Goals/Assists

Johnson - 38/7/na (6 goals in league, 1 in League Cup)
Milner - 36/3/na (3 goals in league)
Downing - 46/2/2 (All goals and assists in FA Cup)
Sturridge - 41/13/7

--

Milner might be a workhorse, but he's got better attacking stats than Downing. No need for a comment on Johnson who is a proper winger. Sturridge's form did nosedive but I'd still prefer him to Downing. Hell, I'd take Kalou over Downing. Heh, I'd take The Invisible Man (Malouda) over Downing.

Oh yeah, and Terry is a better defender than Ferdinand. Always was.
