Day of week travel times have a significant impact on affordability; also this time of year is peak season, so you're going to pay more (July / August are Europe's peak period).

Btw if your destination is flexible, then also shop around on destination. For example currently: Madrid (Spain), Frankfurt (Germany), Berlin (Germany), Milan (Italy) are cheaper ports of entry than for example: France, Amsterdam, Rome, Barcelona, ...

Europe's tough on a shoestring, yet there's many backpacker solutions, and way up the prices between trains and easyjet.

If you don't mind some very long stopovers, try KLM. Always used to be the cheapest, but the overall journey could take as long 24 hours. (This was to London)
