it's a killer...

I must have dozed off a few times while driving home yesterday
Thankfully, they were short bursts of about a second. Never had that happen to me before. I must be really tired. Ever happened to you?

i have. and trust me it's scary as hell. i was travelling to home one day. the time was about 4-o-clock in the afternoon, i woke up when the car was on gravel road and i quickly turned it in the road. fortunately for me the car was not speeding at all, about 500m was a stop sign, there was children on the road about 300m away. nothing happened. i always try to rest if I'm tired, sleeping behind the wheel is deadly.

i got to a accident scene after 30 min, the guy also dozed off.

it's a killer...

Think it's time to sell the bike with people like you on the roads...

Hey, i *know* you shouldn't sleep behind the wheel, I mean, what kinda idiot do you have to be to do that, right? IMO it's the dumbest thing you can do trading a little bit of sleep for your life.

having said that, when you're very tired, and driving on a quiet road very late at night, these things can and do happen - you just can't control it man

like I said the only solution to this is to have someone have a conversation with you, to keep you awake, instead of sleeping in the passenger seat or something.

when you're sleepy, driving alone is not a good choice.

so basically, yeah - it's the dumbest thing ever but sometimes your body just can't help it. it's out of your control and bound to happen unless you do something about it. - so get a friend to play the sax for you and you'll be A-OK. :p

Wrong. There's always a choice. Firstly, you shouldn't be on the road if you're that tired, no matter where you have to be and if you insist on driving, at least phone a friend to keep you awake. If all else fails, pull over. What happens if you run over a mother and her child on a sidewalk? Perhaps and elderly person who couldn't dive out of the way fast enough? A road worker on the highway, cutting the bushes or painting the lines?

My ex-girlfriend was rear-ended by a woman who fell asleep on the N1 a few months ago. To me there is no excuse. You're not just taking your own life in your hands but potentially those of innocent 3rd parties who have no choice in the matter.

P.S. I'm not attacking you personally Keeper. Just making a general statement. ;)

It is scary yeah and it also sneaks up on you from nowhere.

I drove to Durbs from Cpt and dozed off for a split second before stopping at a Engen one stop to get some shut eye for a few hours.

I agree with you 100% Nocturnity. like I said, alone = suicide.

after that night it has never happened again though, I know how easily it can happen.

Don't fool yourself by thinking "yeah, i'm very tired, but i'll play music" or whatever - it happens so quickly!

You'd be surprised...

I've been doing 2-weekly trips into the transkei for the last 3 years now ... 150km to site for meetings, it's a quick trip... but some days you just tire and ESPECIALLY with the sun in your eyes, you grow sleepy before you know it.

It's not caused by traveling long distances, it can happen on any road anywhere. It's the exact same feeling as dosing off in church - you never feel it coming, but you get a fright when you wake up.

My ex Fiancee's brother was killed when his best mate fell asleep and hit a pillar by galoolies (spelling), 2 people died driver had a few scratches, messed the oke up badly and i am not sure if he will ever get over it. The sad thing is he was the designated driver and did not have a single drink the whole night.

I've done Lubumbashi (DRC) to JHB in one sitting, alone. Almost 24 hours of driving. I was drinking redbull by the gallon. I started going a bit nuts!

Dozed off once whilst driving, was a pretty hairy experience! thank goodness it wasn't for long, a second or two.

Brief seconds of not being completely... there. When I'm overtired. Thankfully it happens only on familiar roads I could drive in my sleep. But those moments are still scary when I come out of it. Actually, I'm a lot more alert after.

I've had before - scared the hell out of me.

Oddly enough, I've found that it seemed to happen more in certain cars; my Astra and Sapphire, for example, could make me doze off easily, while it never happened in my Mondeo.
