A team of scientists at Princeton University has discovered chains of proteins found in most living organisms that act like adaptive machines that possess the ability to control their own evolution.

Evolution not as random as thought

I wrote it. RPM's name is shown on the thread because the bot script that fetches the blog snippets is posting using his credentials. :)

Wrong sub-forum? :D

I know this doesn't really concern IT much apart from the technology used to do the research perhaps, but it is very interesting and if past experience is anything to go by the application of evolution theory on AI for instance, then this is worth it for the guys in the dark rooms at universities. ;)

Yeah its a linux email package. And it was designed! :D

PS.. antowan.. this news is already in the Science section :D

From what I understand, based on this article, this seems to have nothing to do with evolution. According to the article, these proteins merely correct mutations that may arise in a cell. Since evolution doesn't happen on the organism level and genes are certainly not passed on from mutated cells, I can't see how this is claimed to be a control mechanism for evolution.

Controlling mutation within an organism is good thing (if your cells continuously mutated, they would soon cease to do what they are supposed to) and it would make sense for organisms to evolve ways of repairing damaged DNA in cells.
