I almost killed Ubuntu when I decided to uninstall Evolution yesterday. I thought I don't need it as I don't use any of it's features (especially not groupwise) and it was looking for a pretty huge update. Everything went fine until I restarted my netbook. I only had a console window after the login screen. Uninstalling Evolution had also uninstalled the desktop!!!

Fortunately, I could get into Synaptic so I could get the necessary bits and pieces back without an OS reinstall. To me, Ubuntu is getting more and more like windows with all the rubbish that gets installed, just in case you might need it. And then some of the rubbish is regarded as core to the system...

That is my main gripe with Ubuntu, they have moved away from a modular system to this junk they now ship. I might also add that all the blame is not just Ubuntu, but Gnome in itself has also been slowly moving away from being modular.

Did I ever mention I do not like Gnome and Ubuntu one bit???

+1 One of the reasons I despise that distro.
 
I was never a fan of Ubuntu, but lately I think it has gotten a whole lot better. Coming from a viewpoint of someone using Archlinux/Gentoo/OpenSUSE on a daily basis, Ubuntu 10.x is not half bad, every distro has its advantages and disadvantages.

I am almost on the point of reconsidering changing a archlinux cluster back to ubuntu, but I don't think it will happen just yet, a few more things in ubuntu to improve and then it might happen.

How did you uninstall Evolution? If you did it in command line in terminal, it would have warned you that package was also going to be removed. Even if you did it in GUI synaptic, the warning will appear.

I love Ubuntu....and I have been using evolution ever since i started using Ubuntu. both does exactly what I want it to do.

I have just done a test, marking evolution for complete removal in synaptic, and it does not warn or say anything about romoving it. strange. you must have done it wrong :p

I also use Evolution. Thunderbird's interface looks like Pegasus Mail for Windows 3.1, the account settings are just plain lame & its overly complicated to backup and restore mail.

I can fully understand the Ubuntu devs on this one - they cant imagine that the average Linux user would want to use the lame Fartbird as a mail client.

Evolution is just a 1000 times better.
 
Had problems on my home desktop. Installed SAMBA server last week (was doing an XP install and had to copy stuff over). Anyway, after the install I had a broken libc and on every boot since yesterdays updates, none of my services are running.

Yet my work desktop is fine.

If I was not studying (UNISA student) I would have gone back to ArchLinux - the only reason why I went back to Ubuntu was due to the lack of time to get my desktop (and my wifes work desktop) up and running perfectly.

But I must say I'm very happy with the latest Gnome. Sadly Ubuntu seems to take all the credit for its rich features (only while trying out Arch for a month did I discover this).

Outlook, now why should Evolution compete with a virus?!

I again love Thunderbird and the new release took about a day to get used to and I must say it has everything I need for a simple email client. If I need more power I would just add Sunbird to Thunderbird.

Outlook is a virus?! I'll have to run a virus scan on my work pc. ROFL

Evolution is just much more functional than Fartbird and I do like the tight integration with the gnome desktop. Also, most of the forumites here are advanced users/sysadmins/engineers/gurus and know their way round Linux, but I think Mark Shuttleworth had a bigger user base in mind when he created Ubuntu Linux.

I thought he said his main competition is Mac OS? He didn't even mention Windows. Think Microsoft was a bit cheesed off that they didn't make his shortlist.

Nah. Evolution is junk.

It's IMAP support is terrible, Thunderbird's implementation is much better.

Evolution is bloated, slow and clunky. Beisdes Thunderbird is cross platform - I use it on my Windows and Linux installs across the board.
 
True, thunderbird is cross platform and works in general, however Evolution does tend to work better in most cases. I used to use Thunderbird all the time, until I needed to start integrate things with the office. I can accept meeting requests, which goes directly into my Google calender which then syncs to my phone. Now most phones can connect to exchange directly but integrating it all in Thunderbird is a bit more work. Also Evolution at least is working on a Mapi library.

Oh Thunderbird at a time crashed regularly on me, until I moved over to Evolution, at which point those problems went away.

Now I am not saying Evolution is the best, I have a few things I don't like about it, mostly as to how it handle picture attachments. My personal preference for now will stay with Evolution at least.
