I almost killed Ubuntu when I decided to uninstall Evolution yesterday. I thought I don't need it as I don't use any of it's features (especially not groupwise) and it was looking for a pretty huge update. Everything went fine until I restarted my netbook. I only had a console window after the login screen. Uninstalling Evolution had also uninstalled the desktop!!!
Fortunately, I could get into Synaptic so I could get the necessary bits and pieces back without an OS reinstall. To me, Ubuntu is getting more and more like windows with all the rubbish that gets installed, just in case you might need it. And then some of the rubbish is regarded as core to the system...
