What is this outrage? It seems the 155 nohopedesk only allows a certain amount of time per month, which could not be much more than 1 hour, before it blocks you and you have to call a different number and pay for the calls, to get help from Vodacom to fix their total shambles with the dashboard and Novatel cards, which they seem unable to solve, and never put you onto anyone that knows what's going on.

Care to elaborate???
Do you mean that you made calls totalling more than an hour, and now you can no longer connect to that number? If they are capable of this - block calls to a specific number based on monthly usage to that number - then I think they should tell us immediately - this would be a most excellent service to prevent those excessive calls made by my son to his girlfriend... I would pay for this service.
Or was it that you made a single call which cut after an hour (that happens all the time - I guess to protect the customer in case a call is made by accident e.g. a speed dial button pressed in your pocket)

There is an automated system in place to stop nuisance and prank callers from blocking the Help Desk lines.

The call desk gets thousands (and I mean thousands) of nuisance calls every month, so if you called more than 50 times from a contract number or more than 20 times from a pre-paid number, in one month, (from the 18th to the 18th), you're automatically blocked.

You then need to call the paid number once and they will check if you're a 'legitimate' caller and un-bar you.

asmith, sounds like you're an innocent victim of this process. Please call them during office hours and they'll unbar you.

I'm more concerned that your Novatel issues need so many calls. What can I help with?

Also, as an, <ahem>, babbler, I have noted, many times, that the maximum call length on any call that I have made, has been 59 minutes, 50 seconds, after which time the network automatically hangs me up.

I once had this happen to me twice in the same conversation. vodacom3G, do you think I'm eligible for free shares?

It was only about 5 calls from a prepaid, but could have lasted an hour or so. Thanks for the unblocking tip V3g, we will give that a try. Help desk has said they would send someone out to look at the problem, but does not seem to be happening.
Its basically cant get dash to work, changing profiles sometimes fixes it, sometimes not.
Then when it does work web pages often do not load properly etc, but this is on GPRS.
It seems to have been worse since the 64k sim.
Just purchased a SAMBA GSM USB card from rfdesign, and oddly that seems to also struggle with Vodacom but work fine on MTN. Going to do more tests when there is time.

The dashboard software in combination with the Novatel card driver is simply just not the kind of quality software one needs to maintain a reliable connection with the 3G service

This is not new (I have been experiencing various disconnects, dumps, etc since Feb 2005) and the external antenna / 64K sim make absolutely no difference.

I suspect that the Dashboard software was probably written with some other device in mind and the developers never got their minds around integration with another device type.

Yeah, I have noticed the magic 1hr disconnection issue, its incredibly frustrating.

Is there any particular (good) reason why I have be subject to this irritation?

I spend 10-15hrs on the phone a week so it can become bothersome since most of my calls last longer than 1hr.

I feel that pain, my company hosts call centres for several companies, some of these are 'customer care lines" One in particular became so much of a problem that the number was changed to a sharecall. We received nearly 2000 crank calls per day on the line. (A regular day for this line should be around 200 calls)

There is a general Network setting that will cut any voice call after 1 hour. This is a safety measure to ensure people don't leave their phones connected and end up with a massive bill.

Unfortunately there is a very small % of subscribers who do talk for longer than an hour at a time and they're getting the disconnects.

I checked with engineering, and this cannot be set per number, but rather only for the complete network.

Fair enough, I suppose that the amount of people having 1hr+ conversations is very small.

Hands free kit, that's the problem :P Irony is i got my kit JUST based on the waiting times on the Vodacom Helpdesk. Amazing how much less frustrating it is, to just go on with your business while holding 10-15 minutes+ to get through to desk. [And alot of the time it's twice as long because helpdesk tends to anwer and go "i must put you through to another helpdesk"...voila back in the queue!

Luckily my problems ain't Novatel related [or maybe unluckily?], Vodacom just can't get their Data Contracts and Voice Contracts right it seems. I'm still floating between some messed up Weekender and 3G 500 without a clue what i'll be getting next. [getting random migration messages in the middle of the month]. My issue is still unresolved.
