Hi all,

I have a very old document that I've found that holds so much personal information - like phone numbers and web site passwords etc, but I saved it with a password and can't remember what the hell it is.
I'd really like to open this document, can anyone direct me to a 'app' that can remove the password please.

I've Googled and found so many apps, but none work, so I'm hoping someone will know of a program that works.

Is the password on a sheet or the whole document?

Try the method in this video

I tried it and it worked. Backup first just to be sure

This depends on whether it is a .xlx or an .xlsx file.
If it is a .xlsx file is actually encrypted and there's not much you can do.
You could try something that could brute force the password but unless it's a simple one it won't work.

Hex edit method works, also used it a few times and is the only real method unpaid... but only older files.. not newer xlsx files..

I had to figure out how to secure Macro's against a user with VBA skills yesterday.
That's when I discovered this gem. Calc opens Excel password-protected files without a password prompt
Open it in Libreoffice. Supposedly it bypasses any passwords that have been set up in MS office.
I friend of mine wanted to protect his macro's, but unfortunately Excel's password protection can be removed completely with some effort (~5-10 minutes), without having to do a brute force crack. I was really shocked when I found that out and actually did the password removal myself!

Before that, I actually went through all the trouble to create a unique password based on the PC's identity, which was all for nothing due to that flaw in Excel.

If the file is old, perhaps, it is an .xls file with a 40-bit encryption key. In this case you don't have to search for the password set for it. Just decrypt the data using an online service. The result is guaranteed and does not depend on the password complexity. I would recommend AccessBack.

If it is an .xlsx file, I can recommend just gpu password recovery. Yes, use of video cards is obligatory if the searching speed is of importance.
