Excessive usage on account

I would change your Wifi password as well, and to a stronger encryption if possible.

Definitely sounds like you have malware or that someone is making use of your network. Check your router logs for connected devices.

As stated above, eliminate one by one.

Alternatively buy and setup a MikroTik router, which costs about R600. With that you can do usage tracking, instantaneous download/upload speeds and do your own shaping and even dial multiple accounts.

Or if you have a Linux box or spare PC, run like Smoothwall.

Could be the phones.

iCloud backups or photo sync, etc. Dropbox photo upload etc.

Why not leave them off the wifi for a day and see what the usage is

icloud backups can chow bandwidth. I did not even know my iphone was uploading all my data until I got a message on my iphone saying my 5gb cloud storage is full....

I have seen this issue with many people.

Majority of the time it is a computer on the network that is downloading/uploading data and more than often it is difficult to find. I have found Google Drive on one computer that had been using a few GB per day via the Chrome plugin.
I have also had two occasions where the user's router has been giving problems and has been downloading/uploading while doing nothing. No idea what it actually does, but in one case it was a Netgear using 100GB + per month while doing nothing. Replaced the router, usage went down to +- 10GB per month and has been ever since.

Here's a far out idea ... is it possible that somehow somebody is downloading data through the private wifi network of the Mweb Fon router, and then uploading that same data to the public Fon network (hence the matched uploads/downloads)?

Mweb's site just states that the two sides are separated by 'a firewall', but that's not saying that they're impenetrable.

No.

Completely different PPPoE accounts on two completely different networks.

One gateway does not see or access the other.

******

OP what devices are these? iPhones using photostreams and iCloud backup would easily chow loads of data.

Thanks everyone. I'll try out all suggestions as at this point anything that helps is better than permanent throttle! !!!

Awww Sauron, my idea would have worked great in a Mission Impossible movie.

There goes reality to burst another cool bubble :D

I don't know if this happens to others, but I found that if I am watching a youtube vid and I pause it. For some reason the download of the vid happens in the background and it continues to download in an almost infinite loop. I managed to download 11gb on my 10mb line in a single afternoon...

9GB daily, only with youtube. Also maybe the torrent software is still running and seeding while no one is noticing but I am not sure how smart phones handle the software.

Agreed,
also 9Gb for 4 people does not seem excessive really - 2.25Gb per day if you look at it - I use about 1.8Gb a day on my own and we are a household of 6...

I reckon check the seeding on the torrents....

Still, the total upload is only 4.3GB max per day. So there is an additional 4.7GB of downloads per day, at least - maybe more in the region of 6-7GB per day realistically. And that can't all just be phone updates, every single day.

That amount of uploading is seriously sketchy....

I download torrents etc - and have NEVER had more than 1Gb uploaded unless I forgot to stop my torrent when i went to work.
If i download a 700 meg movie it is usually only uploaded a few mb's like maybe 30-40mb before it is finished and i stop it.
The only other time my uploads will use that much data is when I upload my photo's via OneDrive

Hi Everyone

I find it very strange that, after asking for advice on Friday last week and speaking to the MWEB Abuse line about this excessive use on my account, the data usage is miraculously down from Saturday!!!! And we didn't do anything from our side yet!!!!

Good Day, as advised to you via inbox messaging.

Your account was being throttled on Friday and Saturday, which would cause the usage to decrease.

Still, the total upload is only 4.3GB max per day. So there is an additional 4.7GB of downloads per day, at least - maybe more in the region of 6-7GB per day realistically. And that can't all just be phone updates, every single day.

Afternoon Ho3n3r, would you like me to have monitoring enabled on your account?

This way, we can see the type of data being moved by your account.

We can provide you the results as well, a couple of days should be sufficient to obtain a report.

This is why I could never be an ISP. People complain about stuff, but cannot really troubleshoot the issue.

So you, the ISP, gets the wrap for everything.

I'm not blaming anyone. Just want to get this problem sorted.

I would start by removing all mobile devices from the network. See if usage is still high. If so, then start removing pcs from network....

But you can check in windows task manager, the networking tab, will show you how busy that machine is with the network.

Last resort, use another router to check.
