Hi everyone

I'm on MWEB 4mb line and since November I notice that we are averaging about 9gb daily. This is impossible for 4 people connecting via smartphones for bbm Facebook etc. We do the occasional torrent download but not to that extent daily. I notice that upload and download stats are generally similar.

I've changed my router password but still no change. Using FON.

Ideas?

OP your router should show you the IP addresses assigned to each device, also certain routers can show you data usage stats for those IP addresses.

Ok this is a serious question: Can social media on a SMARTPHONE (even 4 phones) add up to 9 gig daily?

9GB daily, only with youtube. Also maybe the torrent software is still running and seeding while no one is noticing but I am not sure how smart phones handle the software.

Flexus, I might be wrong, but isn't FON's whole business model that they turn your router into a wifi hotspot that others can connect to? If you check the WIFI networks in your area, you might see that new network. Just a random thought, I don't know how you're tracking the data usage but it might be coming from outside (legally).

PS: Just googled it, check this out: http://www.mweb.co.za/MwebWiFi/AboutMwebWiFi.aspx

The MWEB WiFi router is Fon-enabled, meaning that it has 2 separate networks, one private just for you and one shared for other Fon network members. This allows you to safely share a portion of WiFi with others and in return, they share their WiFi with you. All these WiFi hotspots together create a crowd-sourced WiFi network where everyone who contributes, connects.

I reckon that's what you're seeing, right there.

Yep these app upgrades are a pain!!! It shouldn't get that huge though.

The thing is I've been using UTorrent for absolute ages and have never had this problem. Never had to make sure to exit it before.

The kids YouTube on weekends generally and they've used it way you more than this before without the excessive use though.

They shouldn't be similar. Are you sure that you're not seeding torrents?

I just checked the usage stats on UTorrent - 25.7gb for the last 31 days uploaded and downloaded.

Mweb usage for the last 30 days - 212gb! !!!!

Flexus, based on what I posted above, that's not a surprising figure. Let's say that two other people are connecting to your public Fon hotspot, that'd explain it. A 4MB line running all day can easily generate well above 7GB/day average lol.

what u can do is

download a usage tracker on each phone
and see if that adds up to the usage that mweb says at the end of the week

also that way u can see who uses the most data

youtube eats alot of data but 9gb a day with 4mb thats a lot

thats about 6 and a half hours of usage at full speed perday

Hi, the fon hotspot usage is totally seperate from the accounts holders usage.

So even if there are pepole connecting to the fon hotspot they will not make use of the customers data

Uploads shouldn't be that high. Are you uploading data to the cloud?

Here's a far out idea ... is it possible that somehow somebody is downloading data through the private wifi network of the Mweb Fon router, and then uploading that same data to the public Fon network (hence the matched uploads/downloads)?

Mweb's site just states that the two sides are separated by 'a firewall', but that's not saying that they're impenetrable.

I wouldn't know about that.

Btw, a 4Mbps line has a useable upload speed of approximately 420kbps. That's 52.5kB per second, which works out to 189MB per hour and 4.5GB per day. You have to be connected and uploading 24 hours a day to achieve usage like that. You must either be seeding torrents, uploading to the cloud or have a virus.

If you want to see if the usage is coming from you, then disconnect all devices from the network for a day and see if your usage goes down to zero for that day. You could also try doing that for each device until you find the culprit.
