Hi

I'm running Exchange 2003 std, on SBS 2003. After a crash and restoring the server using Acronis and eventually giving up on restoring the information store due to corruption, circular logging and incremental backups, I created
a fresh new information store. (priv1.edb)

The way it works is that we have our ISP collecting all our email (thankfully) and the server downloads them with pop3 connectors.

Since creating the new Information store none of the connectors download any email.... in event viewer I see the following

Source Event ID Last Occurence Total Occurence

POP3 Connector 1019 3/23/2008 1:01 PM 23 *
The message download process finished with one or more errors

POP3 Connector 1023 3/23/2008 1:01 PM 23 *
The downloading process for mailbox <administrator [domain.local]> was ended
with one or more errors.

POP3 Connector 1029 3/23/2008 1:01 PM 23*
Access was denied to the mailbox <[email protected]> logging on as

POP3 Connector 1036 3/23/2008 1:01 PM 23 *
An error occurred during a POP3 transaction to server <domain.local
[administrator]>. The error is 0 (The operation completed successfully. ).

All the connector details are correct.

If I create a new SBS user using the wizards and new mailbox is created, and I create a pop3 connector linking to external account, it works.

I'm wondering what the problem could be, I'm guessing permissions, but after looking into this it seems fine.... what should the default persmission be ? I've found some articles and applied the settings recommended, but no luck, unless I should be doing something I'm not.

Also, with this new Information store. How are all the previous mailboxes created ? or are they automatically created when a user logs into the domain and tries to check their email, or do I need to manually recreate each mailbox again?

After the initial restore I ran exchange setup /DisasterRecovery + the service packs.

Another problem I'm finding is that I am unable to import users pst's into the information store using Exmerge. I exported the OST data into PSTS using Outlook 2003 as I was unable to access the information stores. I read that
Outlook2003 pst format is not supported and various other reasons.... read as;send as permissions required to import the pst as well as removing Outlook from the PC that you are running Exmerge from... none of these have worked.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Yeah I alreayd posted there and a few others place ;) ..... just dont want to come into the office tomorrow and havce 50 users crying.....

How many users are we talking about? Restoring exchange, especially on SBS, is tricky you must have the EXACT service pack and PATCH level. Otherwise you will get to know our other friend eseutil VERY well.

If you have evrybodies mail in PSTs then I would do the following.

Delete all users and mailboxes. Create new users and then import the email. If you are using exmerge make sure that you have stopped the inherit permissions on the mailbox store and add send and recieve as on the mailbox store for the user who is logged in when you run exmerge. Makes sure the PST names mach the mailbox names. Before you try and import email make sure that each user has recieved at least one email.

If you cannot get exmerge to work fire up a machine with outlook on and import each PST into the user one at a time. Might take much longer but does sort out the possible exmerge version problem.

Only once you have created the users and imported their email set up the pop connector.

Aha ok ...

Forget about Eseutil ... the .edb was completely corrupt and eseutil wouldn't run with /r or /p... bad huh...

I have 50 uers, so I'll test with 1 and see if that works... I dont mind the lengthy process of importing/exporting PST's... as long as it works...

Wrt the restore, I restored the entire system state and all partitions from the most recent image. Im not restoring components.

Busy restoring atm because I just want to take it back to how it was before I was playing around with everything.... then i'l recreate the information store again and 1 users to test the mailbox, then connectors.... if it works then im taking the rest of the week off before I have a heart attack haha.

And I hate SBS -.- .... all those IT service companies out there recommend it for everyone.... its not good in this type of environment.... I hit the store 16gb limit in a month or 2 and have a host of other problems. Single server environment, no AD replication, all eggs in one basket but thankfully not too much data was lost.

50 users? IMO that is pretty much the limit for SBS. Other than that SBS is a great product, sorry you are having such a rough time of it. I support about 7 SBS boxes and once I worked out how to work with them they are an absolute pleasure. I do however recommend proper backup software. MS Backup is cr@p!

Let us know how it goes. Scream if you need any info.

May the (MS)force be with you. :D

So far its not working -.- ....

Ok here we have the restored exchange with all the connectors..

I removed 1 users from AD and removed the connector, removed the mailbox. Purge etc.
Added the users again via the wizard, which creates the mailbox and security profile, added the connector for this particular user to test. I try and retrieve the email again and check the event logs...

Access was denied to the mailbox <web7.rsaweb.co.za> logging on as <[email protected]>. Verify the password for the mailbox account, and try again.

Any idea's ?

Ok so after all this I started debugging the pop3 connector.

Going in via the web interface the username/password work 100%
Then creating a pop account in Outlook express on the SBS 2003 there was auth failure using these details.

I changed the password on the web console at RSAweb and bang it suddenly works.... which is strange because I've done this already earlier today or yesterday to test and didn't have any joy....

Now to test with another user account.

I heard about not bad application-ost pst, it know how convert all information from Microsoft Exchange (files with the .ost extension) into files of the Microsoft Outlook mail client (.pst files) - OstToPst procedure, easily move your messages, contacts, notes, meetings, reminders, tasks and all other information, convert OST PST file when the user account has been deleted from the Microsoft Exchange server.
