Expect a better broadband network from MTN

Why are MNO's still putting up new 2G sites? Why not just go straight to 3G and 4G?

They should also stop selling 2G only handsets. Get everyone off 2G in a couple of years and use the spectrum for 3G/4G

Not convinced. My network performance in the north of Jhb has gone to hell in the last few months. The MTN techs are claiming that it's because of the recent integration between their Ericsson and Huawei equipment. But they're also saying it's a coverage problem. Al I know is that latency is through the roof and disconnects every few minutes are now normal.

I don't know what to believe anymore, so promises like this are a bit hollow.

2G handsets are significantly cheaper than 3G & 4G options. I think that you can also achieve wider coverage areas off a 2G site than you can of the newer ones.

Even if they stopped selling 2G devices (and managed to not piss off their low end customers completely) there would still be devices floating around via second hand markets and hand-me-downs for 5+ years.

don't they piggy back on Telkom who say that some towers go down during power cuts?

Big up to anyone trying to increase their coverage. Heard a fair amount of complaints from mates in the North

Each year they speak of 3G towers added but never have I seen one erected nor see improvements on 3G in my area.

U get cheap 3G handsets now. You dont have to switch off 2G over night either. Set a switch off date 5 years ahead. Give people chance to switch over. Do a phone trade in program to encourage people to swtich.

Think there is a network in Oz that did this. Made a deadline, and when it was reached 2G was switched off.

during power failures MTN's useless in our area.

Must be crappy UPS systems at those towers. I know some of the major stations have diesel generators but the smaller ones only have battery backups which technically should survive stage 3 load shedding - so I am told.

I have noticed the same thing in Parkhurst. When the power goes out the 2G signal on MTN drops from full signal to like 1 bar in about 10 minutes.

I thought it was just me.

Telstra ...

Hope not just an empty promise from emptyN, i battle with just normal voice calls and sometimes my phone just goes straight to voicemail
