Have three Sony Ericsson phones:
W880, w910 and p990, and cant get better than 460.8Kbps connection.

W910 specifically states it has HSDPA capabilities

No diffs between using bluetooth or usb to connect phone to pc.

Have tried at different sites and still no improvement.

1.Should I be expecting more?
2. Could it be Sony ericsson interfacing software limiting me?

How are you testing?

no tests as yet, just reporting what the windows connection says

And from general browsing experince compared to my 384kb and 1mb adsl lines, i'd say its probably a lot less than that too.

Aha, thought so. :)

You can safely ignore that reported speed. It has little relation to your actual throughput.

Best is to run (a few) tests on http://speed.vodacom.co.za.

With RS-232 serial devices the reported connect speed was the actual speed that the computer and device were communicating at.
With USB this no longer seems to be the case, my Nokia N95 also reports 460.8kbps when connected via USB but I'm able to get speeds over 1Mbps.

I use a Nokia 6110 Navigator as a modem from one location only, get 700+Kbps down and about 120Kbps up on 3.5G, unfortunately this is becoming a rare occurrence. More often than not the connection drops to EDGE at about 70Kbps down and 22Kbps up. Stability is not a word I use in the same sentence as Vodacom. Remains to be seen whether the others are any better.

ok, tried the vodacom speedtest link

70kBps down, 20Kbps up. Thats GPRS speeds?
No diffs when using Btooth vs USB

Sony software reports Network as UMTS(3G)
Signal sits at 70% -71dBm.

It depends on where/when you are using the network. Just checked now: 1141 Kbps up and 333 Kbps down (17:15). Also using a Nokia 6110 Navigator as a modem.

70kBps == 70kBytes/s == 380kbits/s, more like [searchforum]"vanilla-3G"[/searchforum] speed.

Apologies, that should have been 70kbits/sec down 20kbits/sec down.

Coverage map shows me in a wimax/3g area in sunninghill at the moment.

Have tried connecting with phones vs Huawei modem at my flat in centurion before and they also connect at different speeds. I really get the distinct impression that my phones are not connecting at true 3g speeds even when coverage is available. Any ideas what/where I could try to change any settings?

Can you try the test outdoors?
