They always want a weak rand. So that they can coin it with petrol.
It is very apparent by now this government doesn't want you to own a car or any kind of transport. They want you to ride the train, in a scene remniscent of the apartheid era. That is what they want.

Is the cost of electricity less than the cost of petrol to travel the same distance?

Estimated cost of the car was close to 450k excluding 30k for the charging unit. At that time the cost to recharge was pegged at R30 electricity. That R30 should get 196km, but I wouldn't try to go over 150km to be safe, if not even less.

So without taking into account inflation, resell value, etcetera I come up with the following:

Car A costs R200k, runs at R1 to 1km. Nissan Leaf costs R500k and runs at R0.20 to 1km. So 200k + 1*x = 500k + 0.2*x. 0.8x = 300k. x = 370 000 km. You won't make that up in the lifetime of the car. Plus you need to recharge over a lengthy period of time. Etcetera. Electric car isn't worth it yet.

The same type of calculation applies to Diesel as well...

If you're buying a Diesel version because it is more "fuel efficient" it will take ages to recoup the money saved in fuel costs over the price difference between petrol and Diesel versions of the car.

YEs, Car magazine did a similar calc using the Audi A4. Only after (IIRC) 120-130 000 kms, would you start "saving" with the diesel, and that was quite a while back when diesel was significantly cheaper than petrol.
