Expert opinion needed

whatever you do, do not buy from WBC, way too many horror stories

Use Autotrader or Cars.co.za to filter your search
Unfortunately too many dealership advertisements are scams.

Also, I've been reliably informed that many car stands purchase cars from We Buy Cars, do some cosmetic changes and sell at double the price.

I've been searching for a Polo Vivo, Toyota Yaris or Auris but haven't found anything decent yet. Any suggestions as to where I should be looking? I want a low mileage car
I dont like webuycars but for that Budget your option is them or a private sale, Like JCV said, you will not find a car at a dealership for that price because the car will either be too old or high mileage.

Personally, I don't feel comfortable with private sales

Then webuycars is the place for you. But you are going to need some patience and a thorough investigation when you do find something you like. Good condition vivos tend to sell quick on webuycars.

My advice to you: Try to finance even if you have cash, that way you can return the car back to webuycars if something goes wrong, If you buy cash from them it is voetstoots and you will not be eligible to return the car even if it breaks down as you drive off their floor. Once you sign on the dotted lines the car is your and you have no recourse. However if you finance you have 6 months and if something major goes wrong within than period you will be eligible to return the vehicle and choose something else.

Read their terms and conditions carefully and make sure you fully understand how they operate as a business.

As everybody said auto box adds to the price and potentially might be and issue.
When you find car with service history call last service centre that did service and ask were there any items that they discovered and work was not done or if something was skipped.

There was a car that we liked but after calling last service centre we discovered that there was over R20K of issues that were not fixed. So on paper it has service history but with quite a bit of a problems.

You might have to consider buying from the stealership on finance.

To work out your monthly payment, get an approximate interest rate, I am older with an excellent credit score, so I tend to get really good interest rate, that means you yourself will be best placed to consider which interest rate to use: I would start with prime to prime plus 5% to do the calculations.

open Excel
=PMT(0.1075/12,60,-175000)
i.e prime rate is 10.75% which in the function you will enter 0.1075/12 the 12 is for the monthly payments to the bank
60 is the how long the financing agreement is (generally 5 years can be longer or shorter i.e. 5 x 12 = 60 months)
-175000 is the amount you are borrowing from the bank
if you input this information in the formula, the payment will be R3,783.14

Sometimes as much as you want to buy a car cash upfront, there is nothing for the budget you have.

The calculation is only for the minimum payment to the bank. It does not include fuel, maintenance and insurance costs.

I have the exact same colour, but in Cosmo trim, although the outside looks the same :

Mine is the 6 speed manual, which actually counts against it when compared to the automatic as the autobox is a Toyota part while mine is the M32 from Fiat/Alfa.

That said I would DEFINATE NOT BUY THE CAR IN THE OP. Walk away!

That Astra seems severely abused even from the outside with the one fog light and tirm missing, scraping on the one door and other side doorsill. The fact that it has an uncertain service history is also of major concern. All of this is underlined by the price. When I bought mine in 2020 it had 30,000km on the clock and I paid R180k. When I settled the finance last year it was indicated the market value is still R180k - the mileage on mine is 61,000km.

In terms of maintenance, I did the timing belt last year, when the car was 7 years old. I doubt it was done on the car in the OP - another red flag.

tl;dr I can highly recommend the Opel Astra J - just definitely not that one.

Thank you and @WoW for the advice. But for me, finance or anything with usury is out of the question due to religious beliefs. I avoid interest at all costs.
