With "internet download" of catch-up programs and other Explora features being boldly presented on DSTV and the unit now selling for around R1700, I though of replacing my old SD PVR with one of these and thus utilise all the services which my R800/m is paying for. I read in a DSTV web forum that this was eminently possible.
My configuration is: Dual LNB on a large dish, feeds this PVR and an HD 2p PVR co-located with the SD, via a cascade switch. An Ethernet cable is available to connect the new Explora to the internet.
I walked into the DSTV agent's shop in Lynnwood road (Gift Acres), where Chris maintains he is the authority in this regard. He insisted I must buy a smart LNB as well as a WiFi adapter- He said that although all sold Exploras work perfectly my new Explora will not work as advertised, when I put it in place, unless I paid up.
Chris insisted that this is not DSTV's decisions that will cause the problem, but the autonomous evolution of technology. DSTV is going to "force" consumers to pay more than R1000 to upgrade their systems. No amount of references to the DSTV website could sway him, he was adamant.
So the R1700 rapidly became R3100 and I am thinking again.
Someone, probably with their eyes on the bottom line is not telling the truth.
DSTV is clearly confused and trying to make a quick buck by arrogantly transferring that confusion to their customer. Roll on Netflix.
Some truth please.

It comes with an Ethernet port so you don't need the wifi adaptor. You will need a new LNB or a multi switch as the explora needs a SatCR input.

"Roll on Netflix" there is your answer. That and other online services. Monochoice and their never ending hardware upgrades will cost one a fortune over time

this inst DSTV rippping you off (although the subscription is another thing) Chris is ripping you off (or he think he knows bette) and feel free to tell him you going to report him to multi choice.
From your set yuo need nothing, the Ethernet port in the explorer will work (the wifi adaptor is only needed if you dont have and Ethernet cable close to your Decoder) the Explorer comes with a multi switch so even that is not needed. from your set up you just need to decide which decoder you don't want and swap that with the explorer.
Or you can just get Netflix

I just used my standard HD pvr setup with my explora and it worked fine just had to use the box which came with it with my 2 cables. The actual Dstv guy from the callcentre walked me through the setup so didn't have to pay for anyone to come out and do it.

I have a normal Dual lnb with a 6 port multiswitch in the ceiling with xtraview.

The explora no longer comes with the switch, you will require a new lnb which is about R400

why would he need a new lnb or a switch if he already has one?
I set up someone's recently with a twin LNb (very old one at that) and it works (switched was in the box)
have they cheapened up the price on the explorer and taken out the multi switch

They apparently removed the switch a couple of months ago, friends bought one and it had no switch. Even states on the box that you require the new smart lnb, as they switching over to a new satellite in 2016.

ah yes remember reading that some where on the MC forum, but MC said RRP for the Smart LNB was under R500 but im sure same thread guys said installers were charging 700+

OP should be OK for now with what he has and worry about upgrade later or just swap his LNB himself ?

Can swap the lnb himself, also it's under R500 this I do know as my friends got one.
