With "internet download" of catch-up programs and other Explora features being boldly presented on DSTV and the unit now selling for around R1700, I though of replacing my old SD PVR with one of these and thus utilise all the services which my R800/m is paying for. I read in a DSTV web forum that this was eminently possible.
My configuration is: Dual LNB on a large dish, feeds this PVR and an HD 2p PVR co-located with the SD, via a cascade switch. An Ethernet cable is available to connect the new Explora to the internet.
I walked into the DSTV agent's shop in Lynnwood road (Gift Acres), where Chris maintains he is the authority in this regard. He insisted I must buy a smart LNB as well as a WiFi adapter- He said that although all sold Exploras work perfectly my new Explora will not work as advertised, when I put it in place, unless I paid up.
Chris insisted that this is not DSTV's decisions that will cause the problem, but the autonomous evolution of technology. DSTV is going to "force" consumers to pay more than R1000 to upgrade their systems. No amount of references to the DSTV website could sway him, he was adamant.
So the R1700 rapidly became R3100 and I am thinking again.
Someone, probably with their eyes on the bottom line is not telling the truth.
DSTV is clearly confused and trying to make a quick buck by arrogantly transferring that confusion to their customer. Roll on Netflix.
Some truth please.
