What can i say that doesn't involve swearing.
explorer just said a error ocurred and needs to close. Now my background shows but NOTHING else.I have restarted about 3 times but it looks the same every time. I have looked for explorer to end it in processes bbut it's not there.
I have also tried to run explorer from taskmanager "explorer.exe" but it says it can't find it.
Can anyone help plz..? As far as this goes im technically challenged:(

I haven't treid to run it in safemode(hence my OS noobness).
What do i press at startup for safemode?

Is SFC (System File Checker) disabled?

I think perhaps you have a virus, unless you did something right before it happened that would cause that to happen?

Im running AVG8 right now. Has picked up a trojan so far. Wil try a reboot after that and then safemode i think to see if it still happens.

If safe mode doesn't work try:

Boot back into windows, CTRL + ALT + DELETE -> Task Manager -> New Task -> cmd -> Type "sfc /scannow"

EDIT: You should be able to run "sfc /scannow" directly from New Task also, but I haven't tried it and I'm not much in the mood now since I replaced some system files and it'll start to bitch about them again.

This will start scanning all your files for corrupted files and replace them from DLL cache, if the file in DLL cache is also corrupted it will ask for the Windows Installation CD and replace it from there.

Since the files seem to be missing this should at least get you back into Windows so you can Virus Scan your PC.

What Operating System?

Press Ctrl-ALt-Delete and switch to the applications tab. Click on "New task" and type in explorer & hit enter. What does it do?

(Do this step carefully. Don't change anything if you are not sure) Same procedure again but this time run "regedt32.exe". In the registry editor that pops up got to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WIndows\CUrrent Version\Explorer\Adavanced
Then look for something in the right part of the registry editor called "SeparateProcess". Change this to 1 (Default is 0).

Now do the first procedure again with New Task -> explorer.

You might have to restart. This will not fix the cause of the problem...but it should prevent that the whole PC tanks everytime one of the explorer instances crashes.

Thnx will try all the above.
If you don;t hear from me again then you know i jumped out of the window:mad:

Ok here i go...

i did not know that..thanks man.:D

I am fearing for the worst for him as my vista was giving this problem a couple of months back due to that new Trojan 2.0.As far as the internet goes there is no fix for it except for a format or windows repair without system restore checked.

If you can use Hijack this and post the log:)

Eh np :p

Problems is SFC/WFP (System File Checker/Windows File Protection) can be disabled (and the DLL cache directory deleted), but you should still be able to run SFC and replace damaged files from Windows Installation Media (IE. Windows CD).

EDIT: Btw if the SFC option doesn't work I can guide you through how to recover the file VIA the Windows Recovery Console (needs a bootable Windows XP CD)...

Ok so no luck so fsr. Safe mode booted from HD looks the same. Im sure there must be a few corrupted dll's but i couldnt find my xp cd(and low behold left it at the GF's house). So i need to go for a little drive :(
Thnx Gnome, it was running, and asked for the cd...but thats where it stopped. Going to get the bloody thing now.

If worst comes to worst and i need to reinstall, can i reinstall with my old files intact or just the programs?

If you only need to reinstall Windows most if not all your programs should still work and you won't lose any data but I haven't done it in years so don't quote me on that. Since you can still get into Windows I don't think you need to go that far, if SFC can't fix it, Windows Recovery Console can definitely fix it.

Sorry for the hijack... Sometimes my explorer crashes when I close a folder (click on the 'X'). This didn't stop when I installed SP3. Any suggestions?

If you don't have any Viruses then it can be hard to track down the problem, you can try running a program like CCleaner to attempt to clear up the registry but apart from that I usually format when I see problems like that creeping up.

I used some registry cleaners before but they don't help. I don't think CCleaner should be solely used as a registry cleaner. It works well for cleaning up junk but I think that's as far as anyone should use it.

*sigh*
Ok so ran SFC and had i replace the corrupted dll's. Then rebooted but i still have the same prob. ?
Im using XP 32bit sp2.
