So when I type this into Google alot of sites appear. Some of how I need to restor my PC back to an earlier date.

What happens if I open one of my folder in my external drive this pop up comes up "explorer.exe - Application Error". It's a movie folder, so not even any programs folder or anything.

What is this error and did anyone ever solve it without formatting?

Thanks

You can try to run a repair, by booting from your XP(?) CD, and choosing repair. This might help, and is the quickest to do.

I had something similar once, turned out to be one of the video codecs installed on my pc. Maybe try removing your third party codecs like divx, ffdshow, xvid, etc. and see how it goes. Good luck.:)

Had the same happen to me before, also because of codec issues :)

You don't have the K-Lite Codec Pack installed by any chance? This was the one that resulted in my errors...

Have you tried this? Look in Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Restore

And look for a restore point prior to when you first noticed the problem

I get a runtime error
Line 212
Debug error

When I try and restore

this only happens when I am in ONE folder. It's the MOVIES folder. There is only AVI files in there.

that's what make it weird.

Have you installed the K-Lite Codec Pack? As mentioned earlier, they've given me a few errors before...

Dont restore!!!

Explorer is trying to preview a file that it has no codec for.
Just change your view from thumbnails to detail in another folder then make all the folders look like that (Tools>folder options) then go back to the folder with the movies select each one in turn with the preview pane open. When you find the movie file that is causing the error either delete or get the correct codec.

Search for 'all in one windows codec' you should find what you need.

dude i had the same problem. XP SP2 has this error. not sure if u have SP2. the problem is that explorer tries to preview the files or get info of the files in the folder and explorer crashes. this will work -> go to start -> run -> type cmd -> type "regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll"

That will work but it will totally remove the functionality - rather remove or fix the offending file, no?

Strange that explorer crashes when trying to preview the file... I have load of files for which I don't have the necessary codecs installed and it just displays the Media Player icon...

I blame Windows :D

it's not about the files that work or don't work - it's a XP problem and the only way around it is to do what i suggested. it works like a bomb.

Another fix you can try is to remove a codec called "morgan stream switcher". I have experience where this particular codec wreaks havoc with the OS and causes it to fall over. I know it can be uninstalled on its own and shouldn't affect the other codecs at all.

Do you understand what that little gem of cmd line instruction actually does?
It removes the preview for media files - the preview is a feature not a problem dude.
The problem is a missing codec or just a bad file, installing the codec or removing the file is the solution. The method I suggested is the most logical way that I can see to identify then delete the file.

Incidentally: if you have run "regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll" and would like your preview back just type "regsvr32 shmedia.dll" (no quotes) and that will restore it.
