Explosion at Yeoville Telkom building

At least two people were injured and cars damaged when an explosion ripped through a transformer at a Telkom building in Raleigh Street in Yeoville earlier today.

The cause of the explosion is not known at this stage, but it would appear to be electrical as shops and offices in the area were plunged into darkness. Bricks and debris flew as high as four storeys into the air.

Emergency Service personnel are on the scene combing through the rubble for clues as to the cause of the explosion.

f* i thought the staff at the supermarket were striking and got outta hand, I drove past at around 08:15 or so down hunter on my way to work... Was really nervous driving past the crowd and seeing the damaged cars...
 
Oh good gracious - it can only be Eskom! Only they could fsck up this badly!

This was like when the Hurst Hill Substation in Westdene went kablooey!
 
Eskom + Telkom = obvious result.

Guess this is what happens when you combine Eskom and Telkom.

Official statement from Telkom

A municipal transformer at Telkom’s exchange in Yeoville, Johannesburg, exploded earlier this morning. Two injuries can be confirmed at this time.

A small segment of our voice, data and DSL customers in the Yeoville area are impacted. 60 mobile links are also affected.

The building is currently cordoned off.

Telkom is in the process of assessing the situation.
