Extending Wireless Range...

Hi all,

I am attempting to extend a wireless network. Having done some reading, I understand that the process of setting up a repeater is going to roughly halve my bandwidth. Is there any way to extend a wireless network without affecting speed? I can't use an ethernet cable (it's totally impractical), so am wondering what other options I have?

Have heard of bridging? Is this relevant?

Am using the standard Telkom D-Link DSL2750U router. Haven't bought any secondary hardware yet for the purpose of repeating...

Please advise!

Dave

Could you use Ethernet Over Powerline devices in place of the network cable to connect a second AP to the network?

The bridging you are talking about would in this context mean using two wireless access points to provide a wireless bridge between two cabled network segments. All the access point devices that I have used (which is by no means an exhaustive list) have to be configured as either a bridge or an access point. Unless your router and whatever AP you find will work as a bridge and access point simultaneously, you would need two AP's to make a bridge and use your router + another AP for wireless coverage.

I agree with Mr invisible.

You will need:
2powerline adaptors
2 ethernet cables
1 wireless AP

Using powerline adaptors is definitely the best way to approach this.

You could install an additional 2x AP's to setup a client and a new AP but this would be very impractical.

Are you trying to extend the wireless coverage for internet access only or do require higher transfer speeds on your local network as well?

Test powerline adapters before you buy them, they are very dependent on situation. I have seen them work very well and very badly before.

Hi There,
I would go with Invisiblejim's suggestion.
If you are going over power then as MDKza says it can work well and also not so well so test it first before making the investment.

I am also looking to extend my wireless network at home, to better share my ADSL connectivity. I have a netgear DGN2200M and DG834GU v5 router. I've tried connecting them with WDS, using each mac address, static IP's without any success.

I've also checked out the tomato and DD-WRT custom roms, but I dont think there is support or compatibility for my devices!

Buy a Ubiquiti Enterprise APN (R799 excl VAT) and simply replace the existing wireless network.

Much less hassle and way more reliable.

This is not the exact one but could also work. There is a Long Range version, all depends on how large the place is.

By replace the wireless network what do you mean...? I am looking to do the same as the OP but I'm genuinely clueless when it comes to this kind of stuff...

What's a repeater? I have two Linksys ADSL routers connected via ethernet and broadcasting wifi for the home network - one is connected to Telkom and provides internet for the whole network. It was pretty painless to set up and ADSL speed isn't degraded.

This past week I setup two of my Billion routers to use WDS in order to give my Xbox 360 internet connectivity and it works like a charm. Send me a PM and I'll tell you what I did if you still want to setup yours using WDS. :)

Why PM? Don't be shy of your achievements, be proud. :)

I mean stop using the access point on the Router (switch it off) and replace your entire wireless system with a new more powerful unit.

What sort of property size do you want to cover?

Probably about 25m from the router so not massive at all. About 165m2.
