External Antenna for Huawei E220

I have moved to a new location. I need to know where my closest Vodacom base station is so that I can point my antenna there. The reception is crap over here and I almost feel like moving again:mad:

Can anybody help with the location please? Does Vodacom have a map of base stations?

In the absence of any specific location, I expect there must be quite a few base-stations in the West Rand area, you could also use the 2G CellIDs displayed on your celleryphone with the "3G & HSDPA Enabled" message to track down relevant nearby base-stations...

Or maybe use Ginggs tool to find the best signal direction:).

Thx Saule & ic for the advice.

I have narrowed my base stations to Sonnedal-2 and Peter Rd-1. The latter is about 1.6 km's from me. I am still searching to try and find out where Sonnedal-2 is, but at least I know exactly where Peter Rd-1 is.

I actually thought about an idea: Why don't we all contribute(not money only effort) and map these base stations on Google Earth? (Vodacom3G can let us know about the legal stuff!)

Google Earth is free and open to all and one can see satellite images and GPS co-ordinates.

Just an idea!

Well at least my connection is now flying again and I don't feel mad at Vodacom anymore:) Thanks to the collective effort of you guys in this forum.
 
Huawei E220 internal antenna direct coupling

I have removed the plastic name panel insert on my Huawei E220 modem and there is a hole near the top that exposes a direct couple co-axial aerial connector.

I prefer direct couple to avoid loss with the Pointing coupler.

So far I havent been able to source the right adaptor cable for this type of connection.

I am hopeing that someone can assist me with this.

Very very interesting, I thought the only possible external antenna for the E220 was via the inductive coupler!! Please, keep it coming!
 
inductive coupler

I wonder if the inductive coupler is as effective as it could be. I havent seen more than a picture of one but it appears to be aprox 90mm pad which would be good if the E220 had a 90mm internal antennae running from top to bottom but it doesn't. Its antennae is one of the weird shaped ones that you find in most cellular phones and is only at the very top of the modem running laterally.

From that I would suspect that by using the patch cable one would achieve major improvement due to the loss of the inductive coupler.

It would also be greatfull if someone with the inductive coupler could try it running sideways across the top of the modem like a "T" shape.
Place the modem vertically and the patch horizontally at the top of the E220 and let us all know if you get an improved signal strength.

And please please someone help find a source for the suitable patch cable with direct plug connection.

I have done just that, First I opened the coupler, on the inside a PCB (size 2.5cm by 1.5 cm) with two copper strips witch is soldered to the coaxial positive and negative. It is situated in the very top of the coupler. I found the best way to mount it to the E220 is cables together and put the coupler front on the E220 front (where the LED is situated). That’s the best signal boost that I got out of the coupler! :)

After thought... The coupler comes with a Velcro strip to attach it to the modem, rip it of and just tape the modem and the coupler together. As little space as you can between the two!
 
Increase signal strength on an E220 Modem?

I've got a friend who has a Vodacom E220 Usb modem. The area where she lives does not have 3G access, only GPRS, but to make it worse she does not get more than 3 bars when connecting.

Is there any antenna, or add-on which can be used to increase the strength of signal?

I'm living in Italy. I'm living in country and the 3G signal is very low near my house.
For this reason I have worked for an directional antenna, Biquad antenna (Gain:6dBi) and I have modified my modem Huawei E220 by Vodafone IT in order to connect 50 ohm coaxial cable, removed the original internal antenna. All the shack it has been closed in a waterproof box and placed it outside my window. I use a USB 2.0 cable of 5 meters length without problems. Now I have 3G signal by 3, also with bad water conditions, rain and fog.
