Yes, like I said in the thread I bought this antenna with the universal adaptor. They say that you need to stick the adaptor onto the USB modem, but I have done some tests.

With the modem & adaptor onto each other, I have tested with Vodacom's speed test page : http://speed.vodacom.co.za.
Quite frankly I don't see any difference between the USB modem & uni-adaptor onto each other, OR USB modem at pc & adaptor +- 3m from USB modem. The test speeds were approximately the same.

However, the antenna DID make an improvement to my signal strength from 3 to 4 bars, and download speed was from 700kbps without antenna to 1350kbps + with the antenna mounted.

Nice improvement, but sadly I'm sitting without decent online gaming equipment, because of the BAD LATENCY that HSDPA gives me.

For some reason I dont get it. So then how did you measure the 700kbps >> 1350kbps Increase in (Speed)? :confused:

I don't know lol.
Without the adaptor (before the antenna mounted) I only got 700-800 max, but when the antenna were mounted (AND universal adaptor I got 1300-1400kbps. When I disconnected the universal adaptor (but antenna still on roof), I again got 700-800, so I guess it works.. :)

I checked on http://speed.vodacom.co.za after about 2 minute intervals.
 
E220 modem with Yagi antenna

Vodacom kindly installed a Yagi antenna at my house since I get crappy 3g reception. For those who don't know how it works....I place my cell on a small plastic "pad" connected to the antenna which boosts the signal.

My question is: Will an E220 modem work on the same principle? Will I get not only 3g but HSDPA coverage?

I would be very curious to get more detail on the "pad" as well as the yagi. Is the pad similar to the universal adapter of Poynting (see http://www.poyntingdirect.co.za/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=ADPT-022-01. If not do you mind either posting a photo or more detailed description?
 
Signal Strength & Exteranal Antennas

Hi All

I have just tested my signal stregnth and get 81dbm, should I consider getting a external antenna and is so where would i get one.

I have the E220 modem.

I have read the using a integrated 5m USB cable also works where can I buy one of these ?

Actually, there is an adapter for the E220 modem now.

Poynting sells them - ADPT-024 - which supports the 900 - 2200MHz spectrum (whereas the older ADPT-022 only supported 900 - 1900MHz).

And I can confirm that this adapter works perfectly with the USB modems.

As far as I've seen, no difference. I've used two 2 meter extension cables to make my cable longer and stuck it with prestik on wall as close to the roof as possible, and that's helped out alot.

It is a common trick to improve wifi signals since there is no loss over USB cable. the 5m cables should be available at most pc retailers. i know pinnacle stocks them.
 
I didn't know that they had come up with a solution, apologies... :D

I thought the USB cable for the E220 had an antenna built into the actual USB cable, and that was why the modem had pretty good signal.
 
Yup, 5 meter's is the longest apparently. As the cable supplies power and data.
 
I prefer all my antennas remain exteranal - not shoving nothing up there.

I also thought at one stage that the aerial was in the USB cable. I was informed it was not, and that it was in the device itself. And just placing the device in a high region, it would get better reception.

Just to confirm: We have opened the modem when designing the ADPT-0024 coupler and the antenna is inside the device. The USB cable does not act as antenna and the reason people recommend using a longer cable and mounting the modem high is purely because the signal is often a bit stronger and does not suffer so much interference from people moving.
