He'll sort you out!

PS: I'm not sure how much it'll cost you, but if they can help you - I'm guessing it won't be too much - but once you know, let us know the price so we know for future.

Depends on how mission critical the info is. Professional recovery can cost many many thousands.

I'd first give it a shot with something like GetDataBack etc. Assuming you kinda know what your doing.

Agree with HavocXphere but on the note, I didn't know what I was doing and I used GetDataBack (and a few other tools) to recover a 320GB that died on me.

You don't need to be a genius to figure it out, you just need the software and patience (lots of it)

If it's work related however, I'd ask professionals to do it but that's just my own opinon because the more you mess around with the disk, the more chance you have of 'losing' data.

I also dropped my external last week and it's failed to switch on. Is it broken?

Check the hard drive and all the chips and such and see if there isn't chipped parts or scratches etc... if it's a fairly new drive, take it back, most HDD's these days have like, 5 year warrantys and such, take it back!

In Cape Town, Seagate drives goto Storegate, Western Digital drives goto Drive Control.

Make up some bogus story and I'm sure you can get it swopped out.
I had 2 drives die on me (Seagate) and Storegate gave me 'slight' grief but I got them swopped out ;)

OH! The sounds it makes would also be a pretty good give away of the status of the drive.

Here's my problem. I bought this CipherWave drive from HiFi Corp in December. Had the receipt in my car, which was stolen on New Year's Eve...Got the car back but sans whatever documents had been in it and my sound system.

The question is, will they replace this drive without a sales receipt or will I just have to pay to get it fixed?

Shyte, that sucks. I find that they can be very understanding. They should be able to track the sale date to the serial number.

I'd go and speak to them.

Get a friend to buy the exact same drive. Put your broken one in his box and return it that way.

This is probably highly illegal, so you didn't hear this from me... :D

I sent it in to Dial a Nerds, and they called me yesterday telling me that it is irrecoverable. Should I collect it from them tomorrow and just take it some where else? Maybe they just don't know what they talking about??

I think I may have the same problem.... We moved offices this week, my external harddrive (Cipherwave 2.0 500G as well) was in my briefcase - I have no idea if it was bumped or dropped... All I know is when I wanted to plug it in yesterday, nothing happened. No power...

Is it possible that only the power in-let was damaged, or perhaps the power supply panel, as apposed to unrecoverable damage to the memory...

I can't get it swapped - my whole damn life is on there!!!!

Ja take it some where else I wouldn't trust dial a nerd

I'll try it - just need to borrow some precision screwdrivers from someone....

If it works, I'll come and report, in case it helps someone else....

Hi, All,

I finally got the cover off - not precision screwdrivers, but tiny allen keys required. Anyway, my harddrive just unplugged from the power panel of the cover, so obviously it would not work. I plugged it back, and now it's as good as new....

Have a look, perhaps you are having the same problem....:p
