Well I have one of those pocket size HD, 60 GIGS, but I need another external HD.

The pocket ones (2.5'') goes upto 100GIG.

Then you get the build in HD in the casing (can't remove)
And then there is the casing you buy and add your own HD, is this use IDE or do you get SATA aswell?

What are the speed one 3.5''?

Casings are available in both IDE & SATA....

Personally got an SATA 80Gb 2.5" HDD... Works like a charm.... Casing was approx R300...

Build your own... much cheaper... :)

Anything bigger than 100G you seen before? Then I will keep the same casing. Take out the 60G

hmmm... i got one of them Lacie 100gig 2.5", and it is buy far the best thing i've bought on my computer, fast, small, NO OVERHEATING (my bothers D.I.Y. 2.5" external overheats)

2.5" HDD are up till 120gb now. Friend of mine bought a Toshiba 120gb 2.5" HDD for R800 from Middle East. Nice and compacted.

Well, I don't see the 2.5", usb powered, portable requirements stated anywhere. Topic said External Harddrives. Anyway, IC in Menlyn didn't have any left this morning and also upped the price online to R1899.

as bwana says, if it's in an external casing, it does'nt matter whether it's SATA or IDE, it'll only run at the max USB speed anyways.
See if you can get a firewire casing. That will make a big difference.

USB2=480Mbps; Firewire(S400)=400Mbps

While USB 2.0 has a higher top speed than FireWire 400 (60 MB/sec vs. 50 MB/sec), when measuring
sustained throughput, FireWire 400 is faster. FireWire’s victory can be explained by differences in the way
the two interfaces negotiate data flow.

And get a FireWire (s800), even faster :D

lol - I think I've used that [very accurate] Toms Hardware link myself on occasion :)

I think you don't need external power upto 100GB for 2.5", anything over that and you need an external power source.

I have a Vantec Nexstar external 2.5" chassis with a 40GB and couldn't be happier. Been going strong for more than a year now.

I dont think its the capacity that matters (afterall, the platers and verything is the same size, just denser magnitically), its the speed, 7200rpm drives would need more than one USB connection or external power to drive it...

nice to see u guys having fun but just a word of warning... sum cases are very flimsy and can result in your hard drive getting damaged (refering mostly to your 2.5 drives) as for the 3.5 try and get 1 with a built-in fan.... may cost u a lil more but its worth the precaution on high volume drives.. i stock the vantec (which i have 2 of personally and are quiet nice with their mettalic blue), phillips and okion
