Hey fellas,

So I decided to run all my HDD's through HD Tune Pro to see if they have any errors.

My Seagate 3TB External immediately showed this:

Description: Airflow Temperature: 29C
Status: Error! Threshold reached. Replacing the hard drive is recommended.
(BE)Airflow Temperature
Current: 71
Worst: 42
Threshold: 45

Firstly, why does it show my current airflow temp as being both 29C, as well as 71C?
Secondly, is this a problem with the drive itself, or just the enclosure?
Thirdly, is this drive destined to fail?

I have not yet had a problem with this drive in any way at all but, i'd hate to lose all my data!

It is still under warranty but will they accept an error report from HD Tune Pro as a valid reason to replace the drive?

Thanks.

1. These SMART values are not in degrees, but there are calculated parameters to compare with threshold. Bigger value is better. As you see 'current' is quite good, the 'worst' fallen below 'threshold'. 29C value comes from the sensor, not from SMART table.
2. I bet it is enclosure. It should be placed in the area allowing free airflow, but it is problem with all externals.
3. Probably not. It depends on how long it had been exposed on extreme temperature. Post all SMART parameters.

Picture is not clear, but it looks like no other problems. Get a small (USB driven) fan to make sure temperature is within norm and it should last long.
