I bought a 3,5" Sammy external HDD, broke the usb plug point on the enclosure, bought another enclosure at Matrix Warehouse. Now it is really slow, to the point that if watch a movie, connected to a MBP, it pauses for a few seconds. Will buying an enclosure with a Firewire port solve this?

Its bad... but wouldn't it be better buying a totally new hdd?? all these parts are adding to more problems and more money...

Sounds like it's broken. When a hard drive goes really super slow like that, it's usually on it's way out. Get another one and make sure your crucial data is backed-up ASAP.
