Were can i get the cheapest external HDD lets say from 80 to 160gb??

You could always get an inexpensive hdd enclosure and just stick in any disk you like. I've got a stack of cheap Sahara 2.5" enclosures filled with old laptop drives - handy to have around.

Depends on your preference, USB powered drives are more expensive than externally powered ones. Externally powered 250GB drives can be found for around R1000 if you look around. I have 3 of these, just swap the plug at the back if you need to swap between them, no need to have all 3 plugged in at the same time.

I am not entirely sure where the other forumites shop but they are certainly being ripped off from wherever it is they do shop by the sounds of the weird prices they are throwing around.

um.....
Please Note: These Prices Exclude VAT.

So your 200GB drive jumps from R999 to R1,140.
Your 300GB drive jumps from R1,299 to R1,480.

Doesn't seem unreasonable then that a price of R1300 is guessed at for 250GB.

I HATE sites that quote prices EX VAT.

I understand that many clients are business customers who can claim the VAT back, but for me, the incl. VAT price is the only one they should be advertising!

The guy is looking for an EXTERNAL drive!

There is nowhere that sells 250GB external drives for less than R1000.

halicon: take your foot out of your mouth.
Topic is "External HDD"...

a enclosure costs only like 270 for a coolermaster x craft usb one

That is something different though. A HDD and an enclosure. From the original post it seemed that an actual external HDD was what was wanted.

An external HD is a HD within an enclosure. You could buy them separately and put it together yourself or you could buy it already assembled. Comes to about the same price, but if you like fancy enclosures then you may want to buy them separately.

USB powered externals are more expensive though.

Fair comment. In my mind they are still two distinct things. The ready-made ones usually cost more for whatever reason and have the disadvantage of not being able to be swapped out for different drives.

I would recommend the 250GB drive and the X-craft enclosure mentioned above.

But I still stand by the fact that 1300 for an external 250GB HDD is not 'pulled out of the air' but rather off various pricelists...

admit it! you feel someone ripped you off :D

fair enough i was focussed on hard drives and not self powered external hard drives.

but your price still came out of thin air... :D

Hehehe!

I dislike the self-powered external drives actually. Only go for normal internal ones and then separate enclosures which works out cheaper and allows more flexibility :)
