You run them backwards essentially giving yourself a "credit" when exporting to grid
Ah, got you. It's been a while since I've seen one of those, I've been in houses with prepaid for so long.

Here I was thinking it was some kind of rotary UPS, a concept that I've seen done at scientific facilities but never for consumers. I got excited for a minute!
 
Can someone point me to a diagram about how the essential vs non-essential stuff works?
I'm under the impression that these fancy inverters can be used to supplement the grid for non-essential stuff like geysers which makes sense. But I can't think of how this would actually be wired up.

The way I picture it, essential feeds direct to inverter and non essential is between inverter and meter, so during LS, inverter is in islanding mode so non-essential line is dead.

Like wingnut says non essentials are technically on the grid so its like exporting just enough to the grid to power the non essential loads. The CT coil is on the grid side of the non essentials so that it can measure when its about to export to the real grid and drop the power.

So its:

grid-->CT-->non essentials-->Inverter-->essentials

Is there an over ride for that? My setup also does that.
 
Yes it will but it helps with the peaks, just mentioning it as an option. Also adding more hot water storage with a second or third geyser feeding each other so you have hot water for a few days.
I just have a single 150 liter kwikot which is ok for two people.
 
As long as there is no bad weather and extended grid outages.
I had two cuts of 17 and 22 hours so far this year.


I’ve only had solar for a week, I’ll have to make a plan with the geyser.
I want to be able to go 24 hours without Eskom or sun, but I didn’t think of the consequences of 24 hours no geyser. Can still live with the oven off.

Put it on essentials and use a timer to run the geysers during the day...

That is probably the cheapest option, that sorts you out at least when you have a good sun day and no Eskom.
The one with no Eskom and no sun for 24 hours probably won’t happen that often one hopes.
