I'm on a 250/250 line on Afrihost/Metrofibre and every single day at 17:00 to 22:00 gaming is not an option as my speeds just go straight into the gutter but thoughout the day when I'm at work the speeds are as they should be.

I logged a ticket in 31 August and again on 28 September which just doesn't get resolved. Afrihost blames Metrofibre and I'm starting to think I should cancel because I get home at 18:00 and can't download games or play online at all because of extreme packet loss and slow download speeds. Now the Fibre Enquiries team just gives the same answer after every mail. "We will investigate" "Please send speedtests connected directly to the router or ONT" "We will let Metrofibre know and get back to you".
I've grown sick of this because I pay the full monthly fee and it feels like I'm either being throttled or the infrastructure in my area just isn't up to par. I'm posting this on a public forum to see if anybody else in the Pretoria Gardens/Claremont/Mountain View areas are having the same problems. Streaming is fine but I use the fibre for gaming online but this just doesn't cut it anymore. Currently sitting on 20-40mbps down and even slower upload with a jitter of 90.

Started this download at 18:30.

On 250/250, This download should've been done long ago and when it finishes I can't even play because the latency is absolutely horrid.

Do you have any other fibre providers available to you, cause that sounds like a Metrofibre congestion problem....maybe the contention ratio is too high

But hey don't believe a word I say, I'm an idiot. Lol

Fibre provider or FNO?
Metrofibre is the only FNO in my area if I'm not mistaken but there are other Providers available at a cheaper rate.

FNO. The network operator is the provider, Afrihost is your ISP.

That's unfortunate, if Afrihost can't force Metrofibre to fix the issues, then no-one can....have you asked your neighbours if they have the same issues?

I don't know if they have fibre. Most people use Rain 5G and I'm not going down that route again.

I think MetroFibre is having capacity issues all over, I'm getting in EC, as between peak hours, I get as low as 50 download on a 1Gbps

Yeah, Don't do that to yourself, congestion is even worse.

Idk keep getting on Afrihost to pressure Metrofibre or at least let you know what the possible issue is, cause you pay for 250mbps it's not unreasonable to expect speeds of within 10-20% variation of that at all times.

Wow.... that's ridiculous, what equipment are they using and what's their contention ratios 400/1 lol

I'd also recommend running some trace routes, during the day when things are fine, and then when speeds are slow. This might help point at where the bottleneck is. But I'm with Afrihost and Frogfoot, and it's never slows down for me regardless of time of day

Currently mine is 300 down and 500 upload, upload is where it should be, but download is not even half of my speed, will see if @Afrigirl can get it sorted hopefully

We apologise for the inconvenience you are experiencing. Please drop me a PM with your account number or email address.

Hi. I have spoken to Metrofibre, and they advised me that Afrihost is maximizing the capacity allocated. Can you please escalate this as they said you are busy with them to upgrade the capacity. The slow download only happens between 7pm and about 10pm.

Hi.

It has been escalated, and I am waiting for feedback from Metrofibre.

Pretoria Gardens here and no issues with MetroFibre

I downloaded a game last night on steam and was getting 300Mbps. I think my package is 250/250 but I'll run a speedtest tonight after 19:00 and post it here

Hi. Can you do a speed test after 7pm and see what you get. This is when I get the issue.

We are in the process of negotiating a wholesale rate to upgrade our NNI but we have not reached the limit yet although it is tight during the evening peak.
