Is it because I do a lot of reading on a tiny iPhone SE screen? The iPhone 5 wasn't an issue but I was younger back then, am I too old for my phone? Will a big Android phone solve my problem, or does it not make a meaningful difference?

Is it maybe a dust allergy?

Do I stare at screens too much in general? Should I go play outside more? Why don't your eyes hurt , then?

Thank you in advance.

Get a kindle for the reading?

An eye test is necessary. Some eye and other medical conditions can cause sensitivity to too much bright light, eg cataracts, thyroid conditions.

In addtion, too bright screens on Smartphones and PCs is a problem. When possible, and usually available in device or app settings: reduce screen brightness; use dark/black backgrounds rather than white; use reading mode if it reduces screen brightness. On a PC, Flux is a useful, safe free programme to reduce screen brightness. In Windows 8.1 (& I assume Windows 10), right-clicking on the Desktop screen brings up a Personalise option, and from that you can choose the High Contrast option with a black screen and other colours which reduce eye strain, or alternatively use Personalise to set your own screen background and other colours. Most web browsers now offer a dark background option, or add-ons which provide dark backgrounds.

Elon, I used to struggle like crazy with eye strain. Used to get headaches and it was so tiring on my eyes. Especially back when I used a reflective screen. These days I use Gunnar glasses. If you don't mind looking a bit different to other people then I can definitely recommend them: https://gunnar.com/

I've got a pair at work and at home. Have been using them for a couple of years now they work wonders.

Males have evolved over millions of years to scan the horizon for gazelle sweeping majestically over the planes and for superior night vision to watch over the tribe.

Staring at a bright screen 30cm from your face is the direct opposite of what our eyes do.

Get glasses, preferably with blue block lenses but they can be expensive.

Gunnar is great. Still using mine to date.

Have you gotten lenses from these guys..? If so, are they any good..?

Wife went to another place, cheaper than the big franchise.. 3 months in and she had a scratch on the lense, using nothing but the provided lens cloth.. just over a year later, the blue control coating is now coming off..

Made me weary of trying the cheaper places again..

Also got a pair, not sure if they are a gimmick or not. Definitely seem to dim the light and reduce strain.
It does seem to help. I think the lighting in my room is bad. There is a lot of reflective surfaces, so that might be a problem. You get lamps that can sort it out but I didn't have the budget for it.

Yes they use french lenses AFAIK. Free no questions asked repair if you break them within the first year and a service after 12 months where they'll clean the frame and lenses and replace the nose pads etc.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Coincidentally I was separated from my phone for a week and my eyes felt a lot better, especially in the corners but they still burned. So I enabled Flux on my laptop and that was another major improvement... which tells me that Gunnars are probably a good idea. Can't find them in stock locally, though.

As for an eye test - I can still read tiny text from quite a distance so I think that means my vision is fine? I'll go see a doc sometime about the dryness if it persists.
