F1 2011 thread

On the subject of Senna - seems the movie implies that he was aware or suspected Benetton of maintaining their driver aids after the ban. Going to be interesting to watch.

Talking about interesting, I've just watched this...
Awesome stuff - flipping scary tho.

Grand Prix - the killer years

In Jackie Stewart's era you had 1 in 3 chance of surviving your career. Jackie and his wife one night counted 57 people who had been killed in F1. I assume those were the ones they knew and not the many spectators who were killed at races.

Racing is certainly not what it used to be as compared to the Senna and Prost era.....

Kinda boring somewhat .....

My view on overtaking / blocking? I say now that there's Kers and DRS blocking should be allowed.... PROVIDED you don't endanger others. If the guy behind pulls up along side - even just the front wheel - you shouldn't be allowed to squeeze them off the track regardless of race line - that's just dangerous. But for weaving? Should be on - the driver behind has advantage of the new tech IMO.

+1

The championship has been won by constructors for a while now. Aidrian Newey is the stuff since Rob Byrne left. Newey vs Byrne has been the story of F1 for over 20 years if I'm not mistaken. How many other designers have won anything in 20 years or so?

Brawn got one year, can't recall Coughlin / Stepney. Who designed Alonso's Renault?

Below are the constructors championship winners from 1992 to present.
Red is Byrne, Blue is Newey

1992 - Williams FW14B
1993 - Williams FW15C
1994 - Williams FW16

1995 - Benetton B195
1996 - Williams FW18
1997 - Williams FW19
1998 - McLaren MP4/13

1999 - Ferrari F399
2000 - Ferrari F1-2000
2001 - Ferrari F2001
2002 - Ferrari F2002
2003 - Ferrari F2003-GA
2004 - Ferrari F2004

2010 - Red Bull RB6
2011 - Red Bull RB7

If you want my opinon, a really good driver is one who can win WC at a team that doesn't win the constructors championship. Anyone know who has done that since 1993?

LOL

Dude you have so many views on what a good driver is and none of them include the driver being good haha.

It's eithrer the car, the designer but never the driver :D. Seriously someone needs to bring the car home every race.

Yep, the last time they used the banking at Monza was in '61... After Von Trips' collided with Jim Clark, he and fourteen spectators were killed in the crash. Brave, brave men those racers in the 50's and 60's.

1994 - Schumacher;
1999 - Hakkinen;
2008 - Hamilton.
Thanks - what about Alonso?
I think you have your list of people who have proven themselves right there, though one could argue that the 1994 season was in a Byrne design despite it not winning the constructors that year. Williams came back strongly at the end and if I recall, Schumi secured that championship under questionable circumstances

I'm sure Vettel will get his chance, but honestly, cut Newey out of the equasion today and it's fair game bar Brawn. Mercedes are still going to win another WC in the next 2 years I reckon. Watch MS be in the top 3 next season.

Those aren't views on a good driver, those are views on a good designer. How were you disputing those stats I posted again?

Winning a constructor's WC is more about the constructor than winning a drivers WC is about driving. Button could easily beat Vettel in a Brawn, Webber could beat Alonso in a Red Bull. Not sure what you are arguing exactly.

Transcript of Michael talking to his team while blocking Hamilton :D
Engineer: Michael, we're concerned you might get a penalty for blocking.

Michael: Why?

Engineer: Because Race Control just warned us you were blocking.

Michael: Blocking? Why - it's my own team-mate?

Engineer: No, it's Hamilton. That yellow helmet is Hamilton not Nico.

Michael: Oh (pause) I can't see anything in my mirrors.

Engineer: Are the mirrors broken?

Michael: No, somebody has stuck a nice photo of Kobayashi in the left mirror and Petrov in the right mirror.

Engineer: Can you repeat that?

Michael: Only joking - hang on a second, we're coming up to Ascari ...Yes! And again he fails to take The Schum! Get in there mein Sohn!

Engineer: Michael, you have to stop blocking.

Michael: We are having a nice battle.

Engineer: Charlie doesn't see it that way.

Michael: You know I wonder if I can get him onto the grass this lap...

Engineer: If you don't stop blocking I'm going to get Ross.

Michael: Not listening!

Ross: Michael, this is Ross. You have to leave room for Lewis at Ascari

Michael: There is plenty of room.

Ross: You need to leave a car's width of tarmac, not just a car's width between yours and the barrier.

Michael: This really is a nice lot of fun.

Ross: Michael, you have to leave Lewis room, if you collide-

Michael: He'll get the blame. He always gets the blame for everything. It won't be a problem.

Ross: We had enough trouble with Rubens last year.

Michael: Schum, Schum, Schum Schum, Schuuuuuuuuuum!

Ross: If you don't move over I'll tell people about 1994.

Michael: Er...you know, I think my tyres are going off.

[Ends]

Mercedes won't win anything, they have had long enough to do something and yet they still struggle to get in q2.

Read an interesting stat in the Motoring section of the Mercury (don't think it was mentioned here already):

Last race was the first ever to have F1 champions in first 5 positions: Vettel (2010), Button (2009), Alonso (2005, 2006), Hamilton (2008), Schumacher (1994, 1995, 2000-4).

Salad will tell you they are only champions cause of their car though, so where world champions finish doesn't matter. It's all about the car :D

I heard the commentator mention it during the day. Airwolf how do you watch the f1 bud?
