Ecclestone: Blame Ferrari for double points

Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has revealed that he introduced the much-maligned rule to award double points for the last race of the season to help Ferrari catch up with its rivals according to an article in the City A.M. newspaper by Christian Sylt.

Last year Ferrari finished in third place whilst Red Bull Racing's Sebastian Vettel wrapped up the title three races before the end of the season. Vettel has won the championship for the past four years running and has been one of the biggest critics of the double points rule.

F1 personalities and fans criticised it from the moment it was first announced in December. Vettel said it is "absurd and punishes those who have worked hard for a whole season" whilst Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo told reporters that he is "not enthusiastic. For me it looks too much artificial."

However, Ecclestone says that di Montezemolo "has not been against double points actually but he was talking about it and I said 'let me just tell you something. It is very simple why we got that. It is because you aren't performing. I said 'if you were doing what you should be doing there wouldn't be any need for it.' He said 'I know, I know, I know.'"

It would have seriously shaken up F1's results if it had been used in previous years. Michael Schumacher would have lost one of his five titles for Ferrari had double points been awarded for the last race in 2003. However, Ferrari's Fernando Alonso would have replaced Vettel as champion in 2012.

It hasn't just been criticised because it manipulates the results but also because it favours the finale in Abu Dhabi which is often one of F1's most boring races. With double points awarded it will be worth twice as much as classics like the British or Monaco Grands Prix.

As Pitpass recently revealed the rule cannot be dropped for this year and, in fact, Ecclestone is pushing to extend it. Last week it came to light that he has written to the teams saying he wants it to apply to the two preceding races, in the USA and Brazil.

Interesting read, though a bit of a one sided view on the matter.

#F1 Forensics: Ferrari F14-T – The secret is in the Power Unit ?
Brought to you by TheJudge13 technical analyst Lorenzo De Luca

As we all know, 2014 is a year of big changes in Formula 1, without doubt, the biggest change consists in the return of turbocharged engines. After years where engines were overshadowed by aero efficiency, it seems that from this year this trend is bound to change. Indeed many engineers pointed out that having an efficient and effective power unit (Internal Combustion Engine combined with the Energy Recovery System) will be the key to win the season which is about to start.

During the winter break, there were many rumours about Mercedes and Ferrari engines, the former has been credited with more power while the latter of a total weight significantly lower than the competition. Just the 059/3 V6 seems to be the most interesting power unit, which for several months was rumoured not only to be lighter but also to be developed with a different design. It’s no mystery that Maranello wants to be back on top, after years of losses.

The new engine in the centre of the F14-T project

As it has been mentioned, having an efficient and effective power unit could be the key to win the 2014 season, so Ferrari engineers led by Pat Fry, James Allison and Luca Marmorini focussed their attention almost solely on the engine. It’s not a coincidence, indeed, that Ferrari is the only engine manufacturer that didn’t unveil its V6 early (Mercedes and Renault did it months before), and this has done nothing but fuel the rumours the 059/3 was completely different from what had been seen.

In the sketch above, leaked during the “virtual” launch of the engine, we can see that it really is different from Renault and Mercedes. The whole project has as a principal goal, the reduction of the overall dimensions, indeed as we can see, the exhaust manifolds, don’t go towards the outside (as happens with Renault), instead they go upwards, and so the MGU-H is placed below the turbine. These are clearly solutions designed to minimise the overall dimensions inside the side-pods. Always with the objective of saving weight and reducing dimensions, Ferrari is the only one to use an “air-water-air” exchanger to cool down the turbocharger, with results that have influenced the aerodynamics of the car.

Indeed, Ferrari powered cars (Ferrari, Sauber and Marussia) are the ones with the smaller side-pods air vents, a feature not to be underestimated if we consider that reducing drag has become very important, but this also could help with managing the airflows around the side-pods .

A fuller and deeper sound, what lies inside the 059/3?

During the first Jerez testing session, people who attended, had the chance to hear live for the first time the sound of the new turbocharged engines, and even here there have been surprises. Thanks to some live footage recorded by TheJudge13 himself, we can appreciate how the sound of V6 Ferrari is much different from Mercedes and Renault.

As you can hear, the Ferrari V6 sound is deeper, not sounding too different from an engine with an exhaust blown diffuser, especially when breaking as it “scratches” a lot. This became popular last year (and in 2011) when exhaust gases were blown toward the diffuser to gain downforce. So why does it sound so different?

According to Gary Anderson, Ferrari engineers have developed an electronic system which is capable set to zero the loss of RPM during downshifting (quick shifting system). Engineers would have drastically decreased the motor brake effect in order to maximize the gain of energy recovered when braking. Obviously, it’s still too early to really say what lies under a car. Jerez tests are never the most reliable, especially this year, as the cars ran without using all the power available (it is rumoured that only Magnussen, in his Mclaren, ran at full power reaching 15,000 RPM). Bahrain, once again, will be more interesting as we’ll see if Ferrari V6 will still have a different sound when all the cars will push at 100% to test reliability, with power units to be almost at their ultimate configuration.

Looks like last year's car with the black underlining around the front end.

Looks like the F2011 with the 2013 livery on it. The nose of the F2011 was rather straight and high with quite thin pillars and a three tiered wing.

Lotus in action at Jerez

The source of constant speculation in terms of its financial situation, rumoured investors and management changes, the team drew even more headlines when it issued a couple of images of its 2014 contender shortly after the wraps had come off the McLaren.

While most teams have opted for a single appendage at the front to comply with the new nose rules, Lotus has opted for two protrusions of different length. Of course whether this was a red herring from a team with a keen sense of humour remains to be seen however, some are not so sure. Certainly, while the image Tweeted by the team early on today shows two distinct protrusions (right) it is unclear if they are the same length.

Oooookay then, seems we have all shapes and sizes for 2014.

Excitement is mounting.

Check the nose on the lotus out. Whats up with the differing lengths at the end? And the pod on the right hand side just in front of the wheel?
Yeah, this pic was posted earlier (#78). If that's anythign to go by then the're different lengths for sure.

Ecclestone sees Force India as potential race winners

Bernie Ecclestone believes Force India has what it takes to win races this year and is confident they will progress up the grid in 2014.

Force India finished sixth in the constructors' championship last year after a tense battle with McLaren midway through the season. The team has not scored a podium since 2009 when Giancarlo Fisichella qualified the VJM02 on pole at Spa-Francorchamps and just lost out in a race-long battle with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen.

But Ecclestone believes Force India can go one step further this year and start winning races under the new V6 turbo regulations.

Like him or hate him, Bernie knows his F1 stuff, if he says so then chances are it may happen.

My fiancé will be over the moon, she's a FI supporter.

I've heard an interesting story about the SA race becoming a reality. It seems something is being built close to CT and the investors are ultra wealthy locals. Here's hoping that it happens.

Formula 1 in push to shake up qualifying for 2014

Formula 1 teams and the FIA are to discuss plans for an immediate shake-up of qualifying rules to boost the spectacle, AUTOSPORT can reveal.

Motor racing's governing body has convened a meeting with team managers for February 21, during the next F1 test in Bahrain, to discuss changing the format of qualifying for 2014.

The move has come after concerns were expressed in the recent F1 Strategy Group meeting that drivers may be more inclined this season to not run in Q3 in a bid to save tyres for the race.

To prevent qualifying being a turn-off for fans, the Strategy Group has asked that teams and the FIA discuss ideas to ensure that drivers are forced to push in Q3 for the best grid positions.

OMW..........changes........again.

Not just changes but artificial manipulation that does not involve racing. I just don't get these FIA idiots.

I guess the days of the ear splitting V8's are gone now. Even the medical car and a silly Lexus LFA sounds better than the 2014 cars!

Eish.

Those 2014 cars sound a bit like my soda stream machine. I just hope it was all worth it.

The turbo sounds like the car is chuckling all the way down the straight:D

Even the old A1GP cars never sounded so hideous. The FIA really need to drop the rev limit or hike it a by a good few thousand rpm.

Qualifying does need a shake up. The problem with the current format is setting a hot lap with a fuel laden car tends to tear into the tires faster than when running on race pace.

Only one driver went near the limit(Magnussen), and don't think he was in that video... Thinking they will be a lot more screamy once they're hitting full power. Also will sound very different in a proper broadcast rather than whatever they recorded that on.

No one actually at the testing complained about the sound, in fact they seemed to be pleasantly suprised...

Although I do appreciate the ear piercing sounds of the V6 (or even the V10's in the past), this may actually drive attendance levels up at the races.

Now the missus and the kids can also come.

In real life, the older cars were frikken loud.

What is this I hear Bernie wants to enforce a $200m budget cap from 2015 ???

Very much doubt that they'll be able to control this.

And why the phuck so many restrictions, this is F1 ffs
