F1 2014 thread

Accident aside, Massa was very frustrating to watch in the closing stages. He had the car yet he was putting it in all the wrong places when trying to pass Vettel.

This looks like 2012 all over again. Williams clearly has a car worthy of the podium but bad luck and stupid driver errors will cost them good chunks of points.

Not enough. I'm not one for wiping a driver off the grid when he makes a mistake, it happens, these guys have split seconds to make huge decisions and sometimes get things wrong.

But when someone does it over and over again he needs a big slap on the head. If that was a solid wall there could have been serious injury, something Massa knows very well and Perez does not seem to take seriously.

Agree. That accident was one of those moments where my heart was pounding... I was genuinely scared for Massa. I honestly thought there was a chance we'd lost him. Perez should be replaced IMO.

Not his fault IMO. The same was true for Vettel and Hamilton, though Ricciardio made it look easy. That guy can drive. Future WC for sure.

Alonso will probably be more worried about former team mate Massa passing him in a Williams than challenging for a win, never mind a championship.

That would make my day, and Massa's also I think :D

So close for Massa. He just seemed to be hesitant when he caught up to Vettel and almost unwilling to risk an overtake.

Phenomenal race, and all it took was a bit of mechanical issues for both Mercs to make things nice and tight. They really are miles ahead of the competition though.

Some comment on the drivers:

Riccardo - What a race, I really like the guy and am hoping he continues to deliver. He has talent, and the fact that he outshines Vettel on a near-constant basis is the source of much joy for me.
Roseberg - He did what he had to on the day to extend his championship lead. Nothing stellar, nothing much wrong. Solid drive, if unremarkable.
Vettel - Drove a decent race, and seemed humble enough on the podium so as not to take away from Riccardos glory, I appreciated that. Still don't like him at all though.
Perez - Ai this guy, needs a fat smack for causing another incident. Massa must've been royally pissed. He did well enough during the race, but then threw it all away at the end. Moron.
Massa - He used to be my favorite driver before his accident, ever since he returned I haven't seen the same passion and attack he used to have. Today there was some of it, but struggling so much to overtake towards the end was a bit disappointing. Still, good drive, pity about the DNF. My heart skipped a beat after the impact, was worried for him, but glad to see he wasn't injured.

And on the race:

Coverage - What the feck, honestly, I don't care about the crowds when the racers are having a go at each other. I don't care about Massa's brother and his dumb glasses when there is action on track.

Yes, and seems very humble and positive. The only likable Australian on the planet :D

I hope that fame and fortune don't go to his head.

Yeah, ironically he was probably trying to avoid what ended up happening.

Lol - what do you mean - humble Aussie Italian - now there's a first :D
He'd be a catch for Ferrari - Italians are very patriotic... that said he'd be silly to sign up for them until they figure themselves out or convince Rory Byrne to come back.

Reminds me of what was said this weekend about Alesi: He was offered a drive at Williams and turned it down drive for Ferrari. Williams went on to win several championships and he only got one race win (Canadian GP) at Ferrari to show for it.

Exactly :) Good comparison!

I didn't blame the accident on him, I'm just of the opinion that considering he had the fastest package in the closing stages he seemed to be wasting it and it was frustrating to see him putting his car in stupid positions when trying to pass Vettel.

Perez should've been pulled into the pits or as a Williams team member said, he should have been asked to back off and drop out of the fight, just like Williams asked Bottas to back off. His brakes were off.

Everyone was doing the same thing by the looks and TBH, better to be conservative and finish like Rosberg than end up DNF - perhpas that was his logic.

Perez/Massa row builds

Whilst the Montreal Stewards might feel the matter is settled, the two drivers involved in the accident that ended the Canadian Grand Prix continues to see it differently.

Clearly furious that he has been hit with a five-place grid penalty for the forthcoming Austrian Grand Prix, having been adjudged as causing the horrific accident with Felipe Massa which brought out the red flag, this afternoon Sergio Perez took to Twitter.

"They say a picture is worth a thousand words... who crashes into whom?" tweeted his team, following it up with a comment from its Mexican driver who looked destined to leave Canada with a serious points haul.

"I watched several replays of the incident and I can't help but notice how Felipe turns right just before he hits me" says @SChecoPerez, the Silverstone-based outfit tweeted. Adding, "If someone thinks you can keep two Red Bulls behind for as long as we did with so-called 'terminal' problems, they are clearly misguided."

This refers to the claim from Williams that the Mexican had a terminal brake issue. However, whilst Force India admits there was an issue, it insists Perez had been able to do a reset which solved it.

"I spoke to him at the medical centre," said Massa. "I was so disappointed with him. I said he needs to learn. I wanted him to put himself in my place because I had a huge crash. It's not the first time he turned into somebody under braking. He has done this many times but he didn't say anything. He just turned and left."

The Brazilian was also critical of the five-place grid penalty Perez received.

"I hope he learns because we were doing 300 kph at the time. It was dangerous and we could have had a very serious accident, so for me the penalty is not enough. We could have crashed into Vettel."

Indeed, on-board footage from Vettel's car shows just how close he came to being taken out by the Williams as it careered towards the barriers.

So the way I see it Perez definitely guilty, punish him accordingly.

But, look closely the split second before Perez comes across. Almost seems like Massa closed in on him a bit ???

Yeah, looking more like a racing incident. Massa definitely comes across for no reason - a mistake, or perhaps the vacuum created by the cars? Perhaps it's the same thing that caused Perez to change line? I don't see how Massa can lay the blame at squarely at Perez after watching that. Definitely looks like 2 people were responsible.

I think Massa knew of the potential overtaking move and wanted to tighten up a bit, at the wrong time.

Yeah, sounds the most likely explanation - Perez should have moved a bit earlier or not at all, but Massa had no reason to get that close IMO. Massa appeared to make the most unpredictable of the two moves.

Is that even allowed, to 'box someone in' ?

Ok, fair enough. Unless the marshals saw or heard something we haven't Massa still seems a bit guilty to me, but that's the end of that case.

Cannot wait till Austria, hopefully more of what we got in Canada.
