Sergio Perez has been to the stewards to clarify whether or not he exceeded the track limits. The Mexican told his story and based on the video images and his statement the stewards decided to impose a hefty penalty.

In qualifying, it is usual for a driver to lose time if he has exceeded track limits, but in Perez's case it was not until Q3 that it was discovered he had not coloured within the lines in the previous session. Most drivers went four wheels off the track at the final corner, but the Red Bull Racing driver did it in an unusual place. As a result, it came to light later.

The Mexican was given a hefty penalty: because the offence happened in Q2 but the stewards said they were too busy at the time, they decided not to look at it until after qualifying. The Red Bull Racing driver therefore falls behind Lewis Hamilton and will even be outside the top ten: based on the results in Q2, he will have to start the sprint race from 13th place.

On Perez: Unacceptable to impose a penalty after qualifying for an incident in Quali session 2. The stewards excuse that they were too busy shouldn't fly. They were quick to jump on every track limit violation in the last corner so why not for Perez cutting that other right hander? Grid drop should have been 5 places, not all the way to his pre Q2 place.

On the Mercs: for both to crash like that shows it is more a setup issue than driver. The wind gusts were their end game.

On Max: I did not see that P1 lap coming considering timing was showing yellow sectors. Bit great to see him on pole.

On Crofty: so much crying about the crowd kicking off with Hamilton's prang, yet not a word when Max was boo'ed at every moment in Silverstone. I'm not saying the Austria crowd wasn't in the wrong, but Crofty showed his British bias.

On the TV direction: No footage of the pole sitters lap. Only switch to onboard facing Max's helmut when he was already over the line! Asleep much?

Eish man, I wonder what happened there. Just driver error or something with the car maybe, considering the 2 aborted laps?

Yeah, either something was wrong with the car or they were just pushing it beyond its capacity.

Is it's Perez's fault that the FIA were asleep? Thus it is probably best that his Q2 time should designate his position. It's not like they can retrospectively fix the situation for Gasly which is unfortunate despite gaining a place on the grid.

Not quite sure I've seen that level of celebration in many years for a driver crashing. I think it's a false equivalence to consider boo'ing on the same level.

This year they've struggled with the direction compared to previous years.

Pretty weird to even call Perez in to explain. The outcome is fair though.

Fan misbehaviour: This is likely one of those things that come with sport (all codes). F1 is a little different in that it could be a life and death thing and the day fans cheer and someone dies, they will forever be tainted. One must just accept it will happen and stop trying to police it else one ends up being a hypocrite. When it happens the the driver one doesn’t like they find justification and when it happens to their guy they are appalled. Let’s just call it part of F1 and move on.

Pole sitter lap: That lap is a mystery to be honest. TV was showing yellow for all sectors so even if they had shown it live, it wasn’t of much interest until Max crossed the line. Infact, they were horrible with lap times the whole of yesterday. They moved guys up and down the board without showing times until later on.

Ferrari to sport original prancing horse emblem

The prancing horse was originally the emblem of fighter pilot and war hero Francesco Baracca, whose Mother suggested Enzo Ferrari use it on his cars for good luck.

The current emblem is essentially similar to the original, which featured a yellow background as a tribute to the city of Modena, along with the team's initials and the Italian colours at the top.

The slight difference is that the original horse was less stylised, while the team initials were smaller and spaced further apart.

I still don't see how these sprint races make for more entertainment. It's just normalising the field and sorting them fastest to slowest.
