Former DTM race director? The same giy that allowed Merc to collude to win the DTM season last year? Not shocked at all

Nah... I think letting him go was political. They really didn't have a good structure to protect him from manipulation by the teams. Hopefully race director doesn't get exposed directly to emotional team bosses in future.

If anyone hasn't seen the new structure.

Michael Masi has been replaced as F1 race director for the 2022 season, the FIA has confirmed.

Masi had been under intense pressure since the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP finale, with the late decisions that culminated in Max Verstappen edging Lewis Hamilton for an extraordinary race and title win questioned.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem announced Niels Wittich, former DTM race director, and Eduardo Freitas, WEC race director, will act alternatively as F1's race director, assisted by Herbie Blash as the permanent senior advisor.

The new race management team will be in place from next week's test in Barcelona.

Two different race directors opens the door to interpretation. Sure Blash can advise, but it is still two different people that may see things differently.

Race director and race stewards should be fixed. Or at the very least two of the three stewards should be fixed and then the tie-breaker can be whichever random they want to throw in.

You won't get consistency by changing the personnel on a near race-by-race basis. Doesn't work in rugby. Doesn't work in football. It won't work in F1.

Spot on. Not even in rugby or football can the coaches/managers pester the ref. That is why the fourth official is there, so the emotional managers can have a cry in his ear and the ref is left to ref the match.

It was a horrible situation for Massi, having to fill Charlie's shoes at short notice... also a clear indication that these things shouldn't all be on one person's shoulders.

I absolutely disagree with his final decision last year but I don't envy him being left to the dogs so to speak.

Revealed: Ferrari’s radical 2022 F1 nose idea: https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/revealed-ferrari-radical-f1-2022-nose/8253654/

"...
As is revealed here, Ferrari has constructed a ‘modular’ nose concept on the new F1-75, something which has never been seen in F1 before.

Rather than having a single nose section, Ferrari has split its design into two separate elements.

Towards the main chassis, there is the structural element (outlined in red) that is homologated to pass the mandatory FIA crash tests, which Ferrari duly passed back in December.

However, forward of that is a complete separate part of the main nose profile that runs down to attach to the front wing. This can be seen in yellow in the above image.

Having this element separate to the homologated part means that Ferrari is offered more freedom to be able to change and modify it without needing to go through the lengthy and costly process of fresh crash tests.

The modular design will allow it to react much quicker in terms of upgrades or tweaking the design – ahead of a season where F1 teams are expected to embark on a massive development push.

Furthermore, with top teams like Ferrari facing cost cap constraints, being able to tweak the nose design more efficiently will allow it to devote greater resources elsewhere.

There could also be advantages from the shorter front element in being able to change the front wing in races if there is damage.

As well as the radical modular nose, Ferrari has also adopted a very different design of front wing.

Rather than doing what other teams have done, with a relatively short mainplane element at the front, Ferrari’s design is much wider. ..."

Curious if there was any pressure from Mercedes to see the back of him. "Sack Masi or Mercedes leaves F1" type of vibe. I'd like to think that despite their grievances and feelings of being done in, Mercedes wouldn't resort to such ultimatums.

Hopefully race director doesn't get exposed directly to emotional team bosses in future.

It's covered in the Sky News link, no more direct contact.

A Virtual Race Control Room will also be created, while direct radio communications between teams and the race director will be removed.

Also

The unlapping procedure behind the Safety Car is also to be reviewed by the F1 Sporting Advisory Committee and presented to the F1 Commission prior to the season getting under way in Bahrain on March 18.

So they were happy to let Dopey and Droopey tell Masi what to do on the radio, but now make Masi the fall guy, because Dopey didn't get his way

Team radios not being televised.
Less transparency.
People cheer.
Many such cases.

Also those were the best part of Apu Dabby.

They most likely would.
Remember how they made sure they were way ahead of hybrid era tech wrt other teams then pushed for hybrid ?
thank Merc for deleting v8/10/12

Masi is gone because he did what he was told rather than what he should have done. His position really was untenable.
Aah but like I said, the FIA and the rest, allowed team bosses to have direct line to Masi, thus directly affecting certain outcomes throughout the season.

They are as much to blame for this fiasco

No one comes out looking good, it's an all round feck up.
