Vettel says he would boycott Russian GP

Sebastian Vettel says the Russian GP should not take place this year in light of the Ukraine invasion and insists if it does - he will be boycotting the race.
Vettel's comments come shortly after F1 issued a statement stating they were "closely monitoring" the situation, without offering a comment on cancelling the September race.
“In my personal opinion, I woke up to this morning’s news, shocked, so I don’t know," said Vettel. "I think it’s horrible to see what is happening.
“Obviously if you look at the calendar we have a race scheduled in Russia. For myself, my own opinion is I should not go, I will not go. I think it’s wrong to race in the country.
“I’m sorry for the people, innocent people that are losing their lives, that are getting killed for stupid reasons and a very, very strange and mad leadership.
“I’m sure it’s something that we will talk about, but personally I’m just so shocked and sad to see what is going on. So we will see going forward, but I think my decision is already made.”

I doubt he will be alone in that sentiment.
Several drivers will boycott Russia even if FoM and FIA give it a green light.

And we're off

The afternoon's running is officially underway, with several drivers getting some time in the car for the first time today.

A quiet start

Nobody has ventured out onto the track yet, so it remains quiet in the pit lane for the time being.

A reminder of the driver changes this afternoon...

Mercedes: George Russell in for Lewis Hamilton

Ferrari: Charles Leclerc in for Carlos Sainz

Aston Martin: Sebastian Vettel in for Lance Stroll

Williams: Nicholas Latifi in for Alex Albon

Alfa Romeo: Guanyu Zhou in for Valtteri Bottas

Haas: Nikita Mazepin in for Mick Schumacher

Track action resumes

Vettel and Gasly are the first to head out on track. Gasly has already put plenty of laps in during the morning session, whilst Vettel is taking over from Stroll for the day.

Zhou makes his debut

Zhou, the only rookie driver on this year's grid, hits the track in the Alfa Romeo. The team achieved the least mileage of anybody this morning, so these laps could be useful.
Meanwhile Russell heads out in the Mercedes, having taken over from Hamilton for the afternoon.

Nikita could win then.
Joking aside Nakita's funding could well dry up with the sanctions and boycotts being proposed as they include all his major sponsor's and his father bank accounts may well be frozen too.

Total laps completed by each team

As we approach the one hour mark of this session, here is a rundown of the number of laps completed by every team so far today:
  1. McLaren - 70
  2. Ferrari - 76
  3. AlphaTauri - 76
  4. Alpine - 73
  5. Aston Martin - 69
  6. Haas - 66
  7. Williams - 60
  8. Red Bull - 38
  9. Mercedes - 50
  10. Alfa Romeo - 33

Horner: Don't forget George Russell

Speaking to Sky Sports News' Craig Slater, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner was warned against overlooking George Russell in this year's title race.
Russell has replaced Valtteri Bottas as Lewis Hamilton's team-mate for this season, and will be hoping to aid Mercedes' attempts to maintain the constructors' world championship.

"It’s what everybody wants to see," Horner said. "You want to see the best drivers in the world fighting wheel-to-wheel.
"Ferrari could be in there this year, McLaren looking strong, so you might have a few other candidates.
"And don’t forget George Russell, he’s going to be a key component in this championship as well."
Speaking of which, Russell is out on track now, but appears to be going through the motions currently with just the 13th best effort of the day.

Another red flag as Mazepin stops on track

We've got our second red flag of the day (and week) with Nikita Mazepin's Haas having stopped out on track.

He had only recently made it out onto track having sat out the first hour of the session.

This after a promising morning session for Haas during which Mick Schumacher completed a very solid 66 laps.

Mazepin's car is being recovered

The stricken Haas is being put onto the recovery vehicle, and we await further news on when the session will resume.

And we're back!

The green light is on, and Ricciardo, Leclerc and Vettel have all headed out on track.

Haas have confirmed that a damaged fuel pump was the reason for Mazepin stopping on track.

Nearly two hours in

We are nearly at the halfway point of this afternoon session, and Ricciardo is still at the top of the timesheets, followed by Sainz, Gasly, Albon and Leclerc.

It has been a busy day for Ocon so far. The Alpine driver has now amassed 101 laps over the course of the day.

He is out on track, along with Ricciardo, Latifi, Leclerc, Zhou, Gasly, Vettel and Russell.

F1 teams set for emergency talks over Russian GP

In news away from the track, Ferrari's Mattia Binotto has revealed that F1's team bosses will meet on Thursday evening, once day two of the Barcelona test is complete, to discuss the developing situation in Ukraine.

Does anyone know if F1TV will give the 25% discount, like they did last year. I signed up in March last year. don't know if they do that every year.

Mazepin heads out again

It seems that Haas have solved the problem that caused Mazepin's stoppage on track earlier, as the driver has headed out onto the circuit once again.

Ricciardo remains at the top of the timesheets

More drivers hitting the 100-lap mark

Gasly has joined Ocon in having surpassed 100 laps today, and it looks like Ricciardo may soon join them, with the McLaren currently putting more mileage in on track.

Sergio Perez brought out the first red flag of the week when he stopped on track with a gearbox issue towards the back end of the this morning's session, and somewhat worryingly for Red Bull, we are yet to see him this afternoon.

Perez had completed a reasonably healthy 38 laps before that issue earlier, but his team are now missing out on valuable time.

And of course, no sooner had I pointed out Perez's absence, the Mexican has appeared back on track.

Good news for Red Bull - can they get some valuable running in over the remainder of the session.

Leclerc goes fastest

Leclerc goes purple in sectors one, two and three, and records a lap of 1:19.804 on the Mediums, the fastest time of the day so far!

Let the Pole Shootout Begin :)

Seven cars are now on track, with Russell, Latifi, Perez, Ricciardo, Zhou, Leclerc and Gasly all putting laps in.
