Verstappen caught Checo so quickly, there can be no doubt that at that phase of the race he was in a better car overall (in terms of wear/tyres/etc). It would not have made sense for Checo to defend his position against someone several seconds per lap quicker than he was. Would have just risked a DNF for both of them.

yeah the tyre strategy made max catch up quickly but i think the strategy was to get max to 1st

not have perez race and win

That was a fantastic race to watch...

Pity about Max's DRS, but it provided for some epic racing with Russel even though it slowed both of them down significantly during the race.
Feel for LeClerc though, that race was entirely his in the bag if his engine didn't go pop.

Not a Merc fan, but was really impressed how Russel defended and overtook. Did not look scared of highly rated drivers. Hamilton will have to up his game if he wants to be regarded as nr1 driver again.
Will never support them, but if Toto and Dame Lewis leave Merc, I could actually at least admire their racing, but those two drama queens make it impossible.

Any news on what the problem was with Leclerc engine? One of the commentators mentioned maybe turbo.

Sources in Italy confirm turbo failure (combined with electronics) being the cause for Charles' DNF. Similar issue for Zhou in the Alfa as well.

Listening to the onboard audio you can hear the turbo run high very quickly just before the power drop.

FYI - sources mentioned are Italian media and "insiders".

But agree with @ToxicBunny - Ferrari will sanitise the official news.

Well I hope that could then be replaced without engine replacement

Only thing is RB did pit Max which also allowed Checo a free run at Russell. The writer Is a bit dishonest with the truth on that point.
I wouldn't say dishonest. Checo lost time behind Max before they pulled him in. He was on the blower early and was denied until they brought him in or am I thinking of something else?

i also think russell fighting with max was a waste of time ...it could have ended badly for him
Russell had a place to defend and Merc are trying to prove something. What WAS surprising was that the stewards never investigated the 2 moves that Russell was making on a number of occasions. Even the commentators picked up on this. You move, and move once. Not move left and then drift across to the middle. That's 2 moves.

Anyways, no way that Russell wasn't going to concede that place without a fight, but with the DRS issue Verstappen was having, it just took him longer.

He was still a bit behind Max when they brought Max in. He hadn't fully caught up to Max and Rus yet.

Never a waste of time. Every lap that Max had to fight to get past George was a lap of excessive wear on Max's tyres that the RB strategy may not have taken into account - could have had repercussions towards the end of the race...

Yeah, most of these guys are racers and are not going to give up a place for free.

Didn't they change Checo from a 2 to a 3 stop strategy to accommodate this though?

Racing incident, move on.

Anyways, your boy wanted to quit 2 laps after changing tyres remember, but they had to stroke his ego a bit and tell him to continue.
Then it was all "the team this, the team that" when he finished. At least he wasn't moaning about strategy this week. He drove well, but he wanted to quit...let that sink in.

While Max probably didn't deserve 1st due to a DRS wing issue, he won because the Ferrari packed up (along with Zhou's Alfa). What WOULD be interesting is if you had the same view if Verstappen's car had to be retired and Le Clerc won...

Sainz wasn't fast at all. That's a myth. Only fast enough for 4th. Check his pull away when the lights went out and subsequent drop off. Only reason why he passed Hamilton was because both Mercs faced a DNF.

Clucky is actually a decent guy so I wouldn't have minded seeing him win and Maxiboy retired.

You could hear it in the driver view. Turbo definitely went.
