Porpoising directive likely to be introduced at Silverstone​


The FIA has confirmed that the directive relating to porpoising will not be introduced this weekend but (more likely) at Silverstone.

Having announced on the eve of this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix that it was taking action, it was immediately assumed that the directive would be applied this weekend.

However, admitting that there is no magic fix, this weekend will be spent gathering data in the hope of introducing the directive at Silverstone next month.

Before any further action can be taken, a metric must first be established, this being the mandated limit for vertical movement of the car which if exceeded would mean compulsory raising of the ride height.


Following the issuing of the directive on Thursday, it was assumed the metric would be introduced this weekend, but instead FIA officials will be gathering data for its introduction, possibly at Silverstone.

"The technical directive does not specifically state that the metric would be applied for this race," said an FIA spokesperson, according to The Race.

"It is felt that the complexity of establishing that metric from all the data from the different cars is not going to be an overnight job.

"There will be a careful and full analysis of the data gathered this weekend and any application of it will be appropriate to whatever arises from the analysis."

Along with the porpoising phenomenon, which continued to plague a number of drivers as the Canadian Grand Prix weekend got underway, there are also complaints about the stiffness of certain cars.

However, due to the bumpy nature of the Montreal track it is entirely possible that some of the bouncing being witnessed is due to the track as opposed to the cars.

"...In the wake of a technical directive from the FIA on the eve of the Montreal weekend to help reduce porpoising, F1 teams were advised they could add a second stay to help stiffen their floor.

Mercedes was the only outfit that elected to go down that route, as it trialled an interim solution on George Russell's car during Friday free practice.

But Mercedes' actions caught the attention of rival teams, who questioned whether or not the FIA had followed the right processes in allowing the extra stay to be fitted.

Although the FIA has the right to change the regulations unilaterally on safety grounds, that process had not been followed through by the rules actually being altered for the Montreal weekend.

That meant in theory the advisory TD allowing a second stay went against the technical regulations, which limits teams to a single stay.

Some of Mercedes' rivals believed that if the team ran the stay in qualifying and the race, then there could be grounds for the team to be protested, as the rules did not match the TD advisory.

Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer backed up that view ahead of Saturday's track action in Montreal.

"As far as the process goes, it's a technical directive - and technical directives, as we all know, are not regulations," he said.

"So it could very well be that we shouldn't be running this in qualifying in the race. If teams have brought those stays, I would imagine they could be perhaps looked at after and protested. So it's against the regulation as it stands today.

"We definitely don't have one. And unfortunately, if you do have an extra stay, you can run the car lower and stiffer, and gain some advantage."

While Mercedes committing to running the stays could have prompted action from its rivals, the team has averted any controversy by choosing not the continue with it for the remainder of the Canadian GP weekend on performance grounds...."

All I head Hamilton say last night during Q2 was: "This car is undriveable man!"...their attempt to get the rule changed is backfiring on them (excuse the pun!).

2nd floor stay is against regs so they can't use it, despite the TD saying they could
 
REALLY hoping Sebastian Vettel's performance in Q2 is going to follow through in Q3! And then into both qualifying and the race.
He looked like he had the measure of that AMR!

I overlooked it the first time but it is FP2 and FP3 or some kind of abbreviation indicating free practice. Anything but Q really :p
 
Interesting FP there... wonder if its a precursor for qualy? And what with b a dry race predicted for tomorrow
 
Anyone else having a problem playing back today's latest qualifying rounds on F1TV using Chrome on a PC or the Android app? My brother is trying to watch it and all I have been hearing is swearing & cursing for the last half an hour whilst he keeps on rebooting his laptop & router. He is using Telkom LTE with a Huawei B618 router.

I think there was a LOT of holding back. Not much to learn in those conditions about tomorrow's race, and hitting the wall would probably have you starting next to Charles
 
If Stroll can't even get out of Q1 in his home race even his father should to start to wonder why he is financing him.
But I suppose if even Vettel is out then it is just a crap Car................
 
Max is unstoppable in these conditions, took him a few laps to dial it in but no one is touching him

Great quali and a proper mixed up grid for tomorrow.
