If sir came 1st and Russel 2nd, no one would talk about this Gp. But at least it was a fun race. Could have been so bored.

Yes but strategically Verstappen cannot overtake a slow car at the restart before the line else he gets a penalty. Lewis could've been half way down the main straight on a track with very limited place for overtaking with some heat in his tires and a more grip. A little bit of creativity could've given him a fighting chance vs no chance.
Talk about clutching at straws. You'll dream up any scenario that sees Hamilton in front, no matter how ludicrous...

The drivers must remain within ten car lengths of one another in single file.

If George had held people back, there would have been penalties and protests.
55m to Lewis and elbows out is legal to get Lewis a fighting chance. Would be way better than along side Lewis?

He'd have caught Hamilton in no time. It wouldn't have taken him much to get past Russell.
All those tears because Hamilton never changed his tyres, and wasn't simply gifted the win. 3 cars got past him at the end of the day. Who's fault is that? Not Russell's.
What tears? Pretty sure Ferrari fans would be pissed if one driver decided to go it on their own and give up a chance of a victory for the team.

Max was 13sec ahead of Lewis (and taking it easy) by the end of the race. You really think a couple of car lengths would've been too much to make up?

Where I think perhaps you and the rest of the forum disagree is that we say Lewis had zero chance of winning, where you're holding on to the very, very, very small chance of something miraculous happening as a genuine shot at a win.

It's not impossible that Russel might've held Max up long enough to at least allow Lewis to clear the straight on a track with limited passing opportunities to get some heat in his tires and grip to allow him to be more defensive.

Sure, ok then. It's impossible for either of two team mates on older tires, in first and second position to defend and win a race if they have older tires than the car in 3rd behind them on newer tires. Never happened before. Noted. I'll have to brush up on my racing history.

Best part of the weekend was hearing the big cheer the crowds gave Max's biggest rival Leclerc when he passed Hamilton that is nowhere in the championship.

Why were Charles and George able to pass Lewis so easily if it was just about getting some heat into his tyres?

Max on brand new softs. Russell on softs. Hamilton on used Mediums.
Let's do the maths with this one or use simple logic...he'd have been passed.

Let's end this back and forth. Your position is that it's an impossibility and my opinion is that it was rather worth trying than not and definitely more preferable than what played out if you're going for victory for the team, not podium, not points - victory.

My argument has more to do with the most optimal strategy for going for a victory My opinion is that the best chance the team had for a possible (NOT CERTAIN) victory wouldn't have involved giving up position for tires if you simply consider Merc's pace even on new rubber.

Merc radio transcripts during the safety car -

George Russell:

ENG: Safety car, safety car, keep the delta positive, you are staying out.
RUS: Are you sure? You don't want to put the soft on?
ENG: You're staying out.
RUS: What happens if we put the soft on? Where do we fall?
ENG: So be on standby, be on standby.
RUS : If it's only Ver- if it's only Leclerc, I'm happy to box.
ENG: So we are splitting, you are staying out. Delta, delta. Stay close to your delta.
RUS: Confirm staying out?
ENG: Staying out, staying out. Look Verstappen on exit, stay tight. So Verstappen stopped for the soft. So it is 16 laps to go. Work tyres and brakes. So Leclerc has also stopped, imagine it'll be soft. So safety car will come through the pitlane, so you are following the safety car through the pitlane, you are not stopping.
RUS: Why not? Let's stop. Let's put the soft on. I'm losing the tyres, I think we need to put the soft on.
ENG: Okay so build a gap, build a gap. Stop, stop, stop, box, box, box, box, box!

Lewis Hamilton:

ENG: So safety car, safety car, keep the delta positive. So we'll go Strat Mode 1.
HAM: Has [Verstappen] got the safety car window?
ENG: So Verstappen in the pitlane, we're staying out. Stay out, stay out! So (it'll) be close to Verstappen on exit. Delta positive.
HAM: What tyres?
ENG: So Verstappen on the soft tyre, he's currently behind George.
HAM: How many laps?
ENG: We've got 15 to go.
HAM: Understood.
ENG: Safety car through the pitlane. Yeah, just remember staying in the fast lane, so stay in the fast lane going through.
HAM: Why did you stop George?
ENG: I don't know Lewis, I'll let you know.
HAM: That was a mistake mate. We had track position. We had a buffer between us, now we don't have that.

It sounds like Merc didn't know whether they were coming or going and were giving their drivers conflicting messages.

* Russell's engineer tells him that they are splitting strategy and he must stay out, implying Lewis will stop.
* Hamilton is told to stay out, which conflicts with what they just told Russell (''So we are splitting, you are staying out").
* Hamilton probably sees Russell stop and immediately asks why. His engineer cannot answer.

Hamilton is under the impression that both are staying out, opting for track position, with George the sacrifical lamb in the hopes of a win.

Russell questions the logic and his engineer changes strategy.

Smart decision would've been to swap the strategy if they wanted a shot at a win - box Lewis and leave George out to try and play roadblock.

He would probably have been a sitting duck seeing as how easy Verstappen and Leclerc got past Hamilton, which leaves Hamilton 3rd and Russell forth if George came in.

How is he a sitting duck on softs? He was a sitting duck because he wasn't on softs. He maybe falls to Max, but he beats Leclerc on the right tyres.

Merc butchered their strategy, as evidenced by the conflicting messages to their drivers.
