Merc radio transcripts during the safety car -

George Russell:

Lewis Hamilton:

It sounds like Merc didn't know whether they were coming or going and were giving their drivers conflicting messages.

* Russell's engineer tells him that they are splitting strategy and he must stay out, implying Lewis will stop.
* Hamilton is told to stay out, which conflicts with what they just told Russell (''So we are splitting, you are staying out").
* Hamilton probably sees Russell stop and immediately asks why. His engineer cannot answer.

Hamilton is under the impression that both are staying out, opting for track position, with George the sacrifical lamb in the hopes of a win.

Russell questions the logic and his engineer changes strategy.

Smart decision would've been to swap the strategy if they wanted a shot at a win - box Lewis and leave George out to try and play roadblock.
Remember that race where everyone went to the pits, only sir stayed out, start of the race.

How is he a sitting duck on softs? He was a sitting duck because he wasn't on softs. He maybe falls to Max, but he beats Leclerc on the right tyres.

Merc butchered their strategy, as evidenced by the conflicting messages to their drivers.
I meant Russell would have been the sitting duck.

Doesn't matter as long as Hamilton is ahead. If there's a chance that he can secure a win, only then does the team benefit. Don't you know by now...
The main benefit not having a whiny hamilton bitching at them all week

Well yes. Russell was never going to win from where he was, no matter if he pitted or stayed out.

Hamilton was the one that had the best shot at a win, if they got their strategy correct; ie pit him, leave Russell out to act as a buffer. He had track advantage and would've come out ahead of Verstappen but behind Russell. Do a switcheroo at the restart, and you get Russell delaying Verstappen for at least a lap and give Lewis a chance at a win. Best case scenario Merc could've hoped for. Worst case scenario is you still end up with a 2nd and a 4th, just in reverse order to the actual outcome.

If you read the radio transcripts I quoted, that is exactly what Merc told Russell they were going to do; Split strategy - you (Russell) stay out, implying Lewis does the opposite and stops.

But for whatever reason they didn't go ahead with it. They screwed their strategy. Which is my argument.

You guys are getting too caught up in the ''lol Hamilton crybaby'' stuff and not looking objectively at what Merc done. If this was Ferrari leaving Leclerc out while everyone pitted for softs, we'd be seeing clown memes.

No Argument from my side, I don't support any team, I just enjoy racing which is what George went and did.

We did see clown memes for Sainz's pit with 3 wheels.

Guess who.
I mean it looks like Toto Wolff

Hamilton Was in the Wrong Engine Mode When Verstappen Passed

According to both The Race and Auto Motor Und Sport, Hamilton accidentally switched to the wrong engine mode. The mode reduced power at a pivotal moment for the Mercedes driver, who was trying to fend off a faster Red Bull filling his mirror at the restart. Verstappen sailed past almost instantly, the RB17's pre-existing pace advantage and new tires compounding with the engine-mode mistake to make his job easy.

Rookie error, dare one say?

They mean Russel pitted causing Hamilton to be in the wrong engine mode.

Did he hit the wrong button again...like in Azerbaijan last year?
