It's fascinating how cars from the same team can have such different top speeds. I'm guessing this has to do with whether DRS was in play, as well as set up differences between the cars.
Definitely setup differences in the car, but fascinating that Le Clerc can be right at the top for two sections of the track, but clearly terrible in the medium / slow speed sections. Would love to see a few more speed traps to see what people are getting through the slower sections. That said, it's also about racing line. Would also love to see an odometer reading for each car at the end of the race.

yeah one speed trap definitely doesnt tell the story here

stroll on top :D

In MotoGP, there is a concession system in place that allows the 'lesser' teams additional testing and track time in order to get them up to speed.

Perhaps F1 could adopt a similar model. There is only so much a wind tunnel or simulator will tell you but nothing beats sorting out issues on the track.
This is a good suggestion. Lower performing teams currently get more windtunnel time. But, as you say, time on track would be far more beneficial.

I'm not even sure that with the advances in digital simulation that you need as much windtunnel time as in the past...

Depends on the team I think. Red Bull with Newey probably get more out of every 10 hours than any other team. A team like Haas probably need 5 hours for every 1 Red Bull hour, if not more.

What I mean is that you can do it digitally on a computer now. Not physically in an actual tunnel.

You still need the tunnel to verify that the numbers from the sim translate into actual effects in the real world. Mercedes are a prime example of how they can differ. In the sim the car is good. On track it’s a POS.

What’s interesting to me is that the lower-end teams could benefit massively from small adjustments. Here’s a prime example of massive time savings that literally any team could do without any additional expenditure.

Top 3 stops of the season all came this last weekend. And to think they brought in some regulations to slow down stops last season.

Yeah but you benefit from digital windtunnel -> physical windtunnel -> track. I know on fluid dynamics that digital is basically as reliable now.

I think we're saying the same thing.

Did we just become best friends?
