how many people have died in Spa in the past 10 years?

how many formula 2 drivers?

how many F2 Drivers have died in total in the past 10 years?

now if F2 is just one step below F1 what does that tell you?

I am only kind of joking about removing it. there should definitely be some changes made in order to make it safer.
but sure when its sunny its one of the best tracks on the calendar. but if there is rain around (always its Belgium FFS) there is either a no show of a race like in 2021, or there is a sad moment of silence at the start of the race because of someone died.

and its not the track that is the problem. and its not the cars. its the weather, there is no change you can make to fix that.

I want to state that I also think Monaco should be dropped. because its stale and boring.

F2 safety is quite a big step below. The focus is solely on keeping the costs down to make the series accessible. Obviously given enough time some drivers are going to die when the F2 car costs $500 000 while an F1 chassis alone costs $700 000.
Add that to a cheap engine that is unreliable, prone to stalling and has no onboard starter, we've got a very dangerous series.

Speaking about Spa specifically, I think a lot of the problems are amplified because it rains a lot. Some close calls have been from lack of visibility (top of Eau rouge in 24H Spa 2021 with Jack Aitken, Formula Regional in the rain on the straight 2023), and of course Antoine's crash.
They have made some changes the past few years and it is definitely safer, but there is room for improvement on the inside of Raidillon at the top of the hill and a wider straight but this is costly.

I think there are some easy ways to increase safety. F2 - new slower but louder engine with antistall and onboard starter. F1 - reduce spray from the tyres with a redesigned tyre and better version of these prototype mudflaps, smaller cars (wheelbase and width) without compromising on safety.

The only two exciting Monaco events were:

The 1955 Monaco GP when a misjudgment on Lap 80 of 100 ended with two time world champion, Alberto Ascari's, Lancia diving into the harbour. (he did escape but just four days later, Ascari would be killed at Monza.)

The only other driver to ever crash into the Monaco harbour came 10 years after Ascari in the 1965 race when Lotus racer Paul Hawkins also misjudged the chicane, but like Ascari, was able to escape the car as it sunk to the bottom.

It was fun to see Jenson Button on his side a few years ago though ;) :D

Nothing. There has been one fatality in F1 (Bianchi) and F2 (Hubert) in the past 10-years.

Which is exactly what they have done when they pushed the barriers back at the top of Raidillon, adding more runoff to avoid what happened with the Hubert crash; a car hitting the barrier and being flung back onto the racing line.

Monoco wont go, it has too much history. At least the quali's are fun to watch.

I still think there are one or two too many middle eastern races. Especially Bahrain and Qatar, both being stone throw away from each other. But the money talks.

F1 ditching Monaco would be like NASCAR ditching Daytona, WEC ditching Le Mans and IndyCar ditching Indianapolis.

Not happening. Especially when you consider the fact that just about every new street circuit that is being added to the calendar has tried to replicate Monaco, right down to Miami and its fake waterfront. If they are tolerating copycats, why would they ditch the OG?

In an ideal world every track on the circuit should provide a different test for both driver and engineer. In that view Monaco is unique and 100% deserves a spot. It might not be the race with the most overtakes, but every driver will tell you they love the challenge it provides.

And the fact that they can sleep in their own beds at night as most of the live there...

But not the engineering problem. Let's just remind ourselves that formula1 is about a lot more than the driver. It's always also been about building a fast car given the prescribed "formula".
