Sounds like too much AI automation and not enough direct human interaction as being the issue rather than anything actually about batteries vs ice power split.

You take the batteries out and but keep the onboard computer/AI in charge of power regulation, still going to have issues of the AI getting things wrong.

This video immediately made me think of this quali run...


Monster slide from Schumi, but he kept throttling the car and took pole. Now? A little slide and the computer literally says ''No''.
