Sebastian Vettel Tests Formula One Cockpit Shield for the First Time

Earlier this year, we reported F1 drivers voted against the installation of protective "halo" rings around the cockpit for the 2018 season. The FIA soon brought another design to the table in the form of a clear "shield" design, aiming to stop objects from hitting the driver without impeding forward vision. Now, we finally get to see it in the flesh.

Today at Silverstone ahead of the Grand Prix on Sunday, Sebastian Vettel was given the opportunity to test out the new shield design on track with his Ferrari SF70H. For the first time, we're able to see how the new design fits on the car, and get some insight into what the 2018 cars might look like.

The new design seems far more streamlined than the previous halo structure, with more overall coverage and less impeded sight lines. We're not sure how well the shield will hold up in the event of a tire impact, but it has to be better than no protection at all.

Now we just have to wait to see what the drivers think

Toro Rosso to face stewards over ‘unsafe’ car

Toro Rosso have been called before the British Grand Prix stewards after Carlos Sainz’s STR12 was found to be unsafe during scrutineering.

During scrutineering ahead of the Silverstone weekend, Sainz’s car was found to have a damaged wheel tether.

However, when the stewards asked Toro Rosso to change it, the team refused.

“During initial scrutineering car number 55 was found to have a damaged wheel tether,” read the note from the FIA’s technical department.

“The scrutineers made the team Scuderia Toro Rosso aware of this and asked the team to replace it.

“The team refused to follow the instructions of the scrutineers and therefore the technical delegate checked the damaged tether himself and found that the tether was not only damaged but also several cut fibres were knotted together.

“Therefore the team was aware of the damaged tether and presented the car in an unsafe condition for scrutineering.”

Toro Rosso have been summoned to see the stewards as they are in breach of Article 12.1.1.b of the Sporting Code, which states it is an offence to enter a car that is known to be ‘ineligible’.

Alonso returns to the Spec 3 with penalties

The good news for Fernando Alonso is that his MCL32 will be powered by Honda’s Spec 3 engine at Silverstone; the bad news is that the engine change comes with penalties.

Last time out in Austria, Alonso had to race Honda’s older spec engine after his Spec 3 suffered a MGU-H on the Friday.

This weekend at Silverstone he will be back with the Spec 3 unit.

However, that change means penalties await the Spaniard.

Alonso will reportedly use a new energy store this weekend meaning a five-place grid penalty as it is his fifth of the season.

The penalty tally is unlikely to stop there with Honda conceding that more could follow Friday’s practices.

And then demand R2 afterwards...

Followed by a strike demanding that it changes from voluntary tip to a mandatory payment.
Followed by a demand for health insurance covering getting run over.
Followed by an increase in mandatory tip amount .

McLaren should hold at least one record by the end of the season...

for the number of penalty places awarded.

I vote they measure out the number of grid places and actually paint 100 new grid places starting from the last and working backwards. Then make McLaren actually take that penalty. Chances are they'll start on the third row a lap behind :p

Carlos Sainz 29 points
Esteban Ocon 39 points
Jolyon Palmer 0 points

But SkySports has interviewed Palmer more times than those two combined. Go figure.
