F1 - General discussion and 2017

For the better part of 30 or 40 years now has been dominated by 1 team. Whether it was the McLarens in the 80's, Williams in the 90's Ferrari in the 00's or lately, Red Bull and then Merc, it's generally been a 1 horse race. The best year I can remember was 2003 when Schumacher, Montoya and Raikkonen were all in with a shot at the title, until Ferrari questioned the legitimacy of the Michelins. After they (Michelin) were ordered to change their compounds, Ferrari romped away with the title.

He just wants a bit of competition, not to lose.

Yep, and by wishing their closest competitor ill-luck you are not getting that competition.

As fan favourites, Max, Danny and Kimi winning a race here and there will generate buzz, but it wont trump a 5-point championship decider in Abu Dhabi. F1 needs those close champioship duels. Preferably when the drivers are not in the same car.

I’m sure that sentiment is shared by every Ferrari fan out there ;)

The Mercedes dominance of 2014 - 2016 can only be rivaled by McLaren's run from 1988 - 1991. Not even Red Bull and Ferrari can match it. What we have seen with Mercedes is on another level.

Mercedes 2014 - present: 61 wins in 75 starts, 81.3% win rate.
McLaren 1988 - 1991: 46 wins in 64 starts, 71.9% win rate. This included a perfect 16-from-16 season.
Ferrari 2000 - 2004: 57 wins in 85 starts, 67.1%.
Red Bull 2010 - 2013: 41 wins in 77 starts, 53.3%.

Not even the ultra-dominant Williams of 1992 and 1993 can come close. The iconic FW14, with all its drivers aids and electronics, only won 17 of 32 Grands Prix (53.1%). Between 1992 and 1993 Williams won 21 of 32 Grands Prix for a 65.6% win rate.

Its unprecedented.

I wonder what Liberty would want.
For Hamilton to secure the title in America, again, will be a big boot for F1 in America.
On the other hand it is better for the overall package if the last race were to be the decider.
But the last race is now a political, payed for spectacle, rather than a traditional F1 race.
I still consider the final race as being in Brazil.

#HamiltonIsAnAngelComparedToVettel

back in the day, the sport was great when their were no angels in it... You raced, you pissed off other drivers, and it was entertaining to watch. Thats why i like Seb and Max, and even Kimi and Ricciardo.. Guys who dont give a ****, and they will do what it takes to get ahead.

And guess how many of those wins Hamilton contributed to.

Those cars back in the 90s had the prerogative to go flat out and testing was much more frequent in the season. Nowadays the racing is big budget but low on action which needs to change asap.

Not quite sure why so many want Vettel to endure more bad luck. Are you honestly happy with Mercedes maintaining their stranglehold on the sport?

Why not? Im quite sure many enjoyed seeing ferrari annihilate its competition with Schumacher at the wheel for 5 straight years. As long as there's another team to put Ferrari in its place I'm happy.

Is the USGP timetable delayed this year?
I am sure it was not this late at night in previous years.

Times in Austin:

South African time:

So Quali is 11PM on Saturday and Lights our at 9PM on Sunday.

Annihilate the competiton? It was much closer back then.. he also didnt annihilate them in the best car

I do not believe any team will really come close to Merc anytime soon, simply because Daimler has pinned their future on hybrid and pure electric cars and have invested in R&D accordingly. Whether you agree or not, F1 imo has become another R&D exercise for them. Before the Project 1 hyper car, F1 tech was in their road cars from a hybrid perspective. Their natural competitors are not even in F1 and Honda and Renault are playing catch up in the hybrid world too.

Ferrari couldn't be bothered as they sell their cars without much effort and their ONE hybrid car, although spectacular, is all they have.

The numbers will probably surprise you.

Hamilton: 31 wins with Rosberg as his teammate (Excludes his 1 win in 2013). Hamilton finished second to Rosberg on 11 occasions.
Rosberg: 20 wins with Hamilton as his teammate (Excludes his 2 wins in 2013). Rosberg finished second to Hamilton on 17 occasions.

Rosberg was far superior to Webber and Barrichello whilst driving top equipment. You have to go back to Senna-Prost to find a set of teammates in a dominant car that can come close.

The dynamic has obviously changed since Bottas has arrived as he is an obvious #2. His Hamilton's Barrichello. And still, he is comfortably sitting 3rd in the standing and has just about helped guarantee a 4th straight constructor's title.

Really can't argue how dominant this team has been.

QUALIFYING for the United States Grand Prix in October has been pushed back two hours to accommodate a Justin Timberlake concert.

Pop star Timberlake is due to perform at the Circuit of the Americas on the evening of Saturday, October 21, and following a request by promoters of the Texas race, qualifying on that day will be moved back by two hours.

So we have already reached the stage where the unrelated support acts take preference over the F1 racing schedule because they are better publicity / Cash cows :(

F1 always has been and always will be a hard sell in the US unfortunately. Its just not the average American sports fans cup of tea.
