Facebook blocks profile suicide website

more thing things for people to do.somehow i don't believe either parties

"Facebook provides the ability for people who no longer want to use the site to either deactivate their account or delete it completely," Facebook said.

Liars. There is no way to delete your profile completely. You can deactivate, which is pretty pointless, coz all you have to do is login again, just once, and you back to square one, without facebook even asking if you want re-activate your account.

I had to manually delete all my friends, messages, contact info, applications, also change my name to something bogus, and finally change my password to something I wouldn't be able to remember.

And still I don't feel comfortable, knowing that all my info is archived somewhere on Facebook's servers.

Depends how much personal info you uploaded. It amazes me how much of it some people have on the profile. Do you really need to advertise you phone number and address :erm:

I deleted my facebook profile about 2 years ago.... its not that hard....

I'll say it again. Never upload anything to the Internet that you don't mind being distributed for all eternity. If you created a Facebook profile and there is info on there that you regret putting there... you only have yourself to blame. Come on people this is not rocket science. Are you going to blame Facebook or the internet cos you shared something that you don't want shared. You should have known better. Nothing on the internet is secure and once you share it you sacrifice all privacy rights to it for all eternity.

I use Facebook extensively and have plenty of pictures and info there. That said, I am resolved that it was a sacrifice of my privacy to do so. So be it. I'm happy with that.... and with MySpace and Orkut and a thousand other sites where I have left my mess all over the internet. It was my decision not theirs.

Well said. Its amazing in this day and age that people still complain about their privacy being violated when they've upped just about every bit of info about themselves to a social networking site.

Why did you sign up in the first place?

To try it out. Don't you try out services on the internet??

Because experiencing something firsthand is the best way to decide if it is going to be of any real value?

Not much personal info. I am very paranoid. Which is why I tried to delete the profile at the end of it...

Agreed.

I'm not complaning about the privacy issues - I was well aware of the issues at the time. My main point is that Facebook are lying when they say you can delete your profile completely. You can de-activate it, but not delete it completely, unless you manually trawl through your profile and delete every single item. Well at least that was the last time I checked, in mid 2009.

From a technical point of View, it makes sense why they won't just allow you to completely delete your profile. It would really strain their servers trying to delete everything in one SQL Transaction (which is the right way to do it). Imagine locking so many tables for one delete? I guess it all depends on their implementation, but I reckon the most important thing they don't want to lose is all the user-generated content, which they now OWN (read the T&C if you don't believe me). This is their biggest money maker and draws millions of people to the service, and in turn all the paying advertisers.
