Facebook Feb problems..

Had a phonecall today from one of the senior network guys after sending him a snotty email...

Situation is as follows:
New transparent cache was implemented recently. The server started to take strain when a change happened on the routing side that it was not optomised for.

They have identified the problem and the fix is in the job queue to be implemented in the next maintenance window.

They are also aware that their DNS system is taking strain and are busy with an upgrade on that system that is expected to take a few weeks.

the above explains the groovy problems i have been having. hopefully this resolves the issues... esp with their DNS that seems to reboot at random during a day and evening.

All these answers they're giving don't make sense because this problem seems to be isolated to certain websites. For example, Facebook either doesn't allow me to log in (or even get to the home page), and if it does, it takes ages for it to get from page to page. For the last 3 days I can't log in at home (Iburst) but I have no problems at work (ADSL). Google started doing the same thing today, but it seems to be behaving itself now. Imdb.com (a site I use regularly) never gives me any problems. What's so special about Facebook? Does it have anything to do with the fact that SA has one the largest Facebook networks in the world?

Geez, the problem is still persisting. Does anyone have Facebook's IP address so I can ping it? I can't even get to Google to search for it.

At this point I'd cancel my iburst if hadn't forked over R2000 for the modem. *sigh*

the problem is probably that most of the iburst suckers in sa are also on facebook so if they block that site with random errors and k@k they'll save on bandwidth...

pity it only adds to their incompetence count...

oh man...

will the tyranny ever end????

Facebook is probably a very high volume site. I bet pretty much every single iBurst subscriber has one, even grumpy old me! The Facebook problem is probably because everybody is accessing it at the same time, and also because everybody has a facebook account, its the one site that everybody will notice a problem with.
The solution? iBurst need to upgrade their infrastructure to cope.

and once again, facebook and a few other sites are suddenly inaccessible...

Will the incompetence never end...

they should rename the company to iZuma or something like that....

...and today google comes up with the spyware/virus warning...thank goodness for blackle.com

Ai.

loads ok here, actually the fastest site to load at the moment. But streaming or browsing other sites sloooow.... constant buffers on a 24kbit stream from di.fm! common...

Oh, as to the topic of this thread :), I don't use it but the site tour seems to work OK as as a few minutes ago.

Update: On the other hand, The Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk) is unreachable...

'scuse the french but the network status page on their website is a croc of ****! ! !

How can they try and tell us that EVERYTHING is good when clearly from this thread almost nobody has any usable conectivity?

My iBurst connection to FaceBook is even slower than trying to connect via dialup. And once I actually do manage to get onto the site, my connection to the internet is terminated. Also my download speeds are VERY slow. I've been trying to download the Leopard 10.5.2 OS update for 3 days now with cut connections and slow speeds. Thank goodness I'm a monthly customer. If this crap goes on any longer, I'll be moving to something else.

Not being a facebook user, I couldn't see the problem, so I tried to get on at 0400 this morning - nothing. I changed DNS to opendns and got in no problem - I even registered on facebook without any hiccups.

iburst is definitely blocking something through DNS.
