Facebook fetish

I could never see the need for these sites ie. myspace but facebook hooked me. I think the lack of really bad fonts/colors helps :)

It was awesome until they added all these stupid applications. When I first signed up, Facebook loaded pages almost instantly. Now, I can open up Facebook, open up MySpace AND LOGIN to MySpace, before the Facebook login page even loads. Bit of an insult to be slower than MySpace.

They have automatic copyright on everything that is submitted to them... hmm... didn't knew that. Wonder what exactly that means in terms of reproduction. But who cares, many of them are South Africans. Not the most law-devoted citizens on earth. :D

Dovi: Don't add the stupid applications :D

Besides, the load times are only bad depending on the applications in question. They're pretty much all third party applications so when you run them Facebook queries the application and then sends the data on to you. Hence the time.

Keep it simple like it's meant to be and it's still pretty ninja.

Seriously, facebook is pretty damned cool. Facebook is essentially the grown-up version of MySpace.

Where MySpace is full of 13 year olds going “OMG! LOLZ!!!!!” and looks like the kind of site your granny might design if she were an acid fiend, Facebook is clean, simple and has about as much style as James Bond dressed in the Louvre.

Add to that the immense amount of members and you’ve got yourself a winner. It’s almost completely guaranteed that among the 15 or so million members you’ll find someone you know and be able to contact them. I’ve found people that I haven’t spoken to for more than 11 years and it’s amazing to see how fast your friends list expands.

I’d seriously advise every single person to go have a look at Facebook at least. It’s well worth the minimal amount of effort involved in creating a profile and you’ll be seeing returns within minutes.

AntiThesis - I don't add them. It's the invites that piss me off :/ I find Facebook slow - the actual platform. (but only recently).

I rate Facebook has its fair shares of little thirteen year old whores;). They just stick to their own schools now.

It must be dodgy south african internet. I first started using it when I got to the uk a few weeks ago and it is honestly the most responsive site ive used.

I think basically they can use any image you submit for whatever they like, even if you take it down later they can still use it in advertising or whatever. Its a public forum though anyway so presumably you wouldn't publish anything you're not happy to see reproduced.

what the isp has to say about it

Hey, anyone interested in exactly how popular facebook really is, and how much traffic it generates on the internet, heres the top 10 sending domains on one of our mailservers at WD.
ps, this mailserver pushes roughly 20000 emails a a day.

for the past 3 months, facebook.com has been climbing to the number 3 spot on our mailservers.
comparisons to it are :
mweb.co.za at position 6
gmail.com at position 7
yahoo.com at position 10

yep, thats right, more mails come into this server from facebook, than mweb, gmail and yahoo.
see image here

yah.. sometimes facebook is fast other times slow.. but then saix is crawling too lately every now and then. I don't like the app things tho, but having said that i use alot of them :P

Well it's not really surprising that facebook accounts for a large amount of emails. If you'd noticed their job openings a little while ago there was a call for a DB/email manager who could help to streamline a system sending upwards of 50mil emails daily. O_o

I use Facebook, only recently thanks to my significant other. I don't really get the fuss. I prefer my MySpace profile a lot more, I get to add things, change things - I just feel like I have more control over my MySpace than I do over Facebook.

Facebook .. just... seems.. lame to me :/

*huggles his mp3 player on his MySpace*

i honestly also prefer myspace.. its more customizable :)

And no wonder face book sends so many e-mails... i signed up two days ago i already have 34 e-mails from them... its like spam i swear.

u now can have a mp3 player on facebook too btw .. just it don't autoplay(thankfully)

Hated myspace and really like facebook. 4cer, you can stop those emails by clicking "account" (top right) and then "notifications". Simple :)

I WOULD like Facebook if they added my high school (Durbanville Highschool) but when I asked them to do it, they told me that my high school does not exist and is a fake created by me in order to live out my paedophilia ways.

That is actually what they told me, even though I gave them a link to our school's website. (http://www.durbanvillehs.co.za)

Silly people.

I hated myspace and the way it looked and facebook has indeed helped me get in touch with old school buddies and other friends. Whats more I can even access it from my mobile phone.

It sounds like Google's do no evil thing though. For some reason the CIA theory seems rathe plausible as there is something about the site that has an "agency" feel to it. I am interested in trying to develop a third party app for it and it seems a little closed. When you look at Firefox anyone can develop the same stuff like Microsoft and Google can, this makes me a little suspicious. But then again it could be for security reasons.
Another thing I am not pleased with, is the way Facebook wants your email password and login, so that it can access all your contacts. All of this has always given Facebook a fishy smell to me.

There are somethings about Facebook that need to be seriously redesigned too and I suspect there are security flaws underneath.

Either way I don't put anything to private on my profile. Interesting article though since its the first time I have heard anyhting about Facebook being nefarious. Guess it kinda makes my suspicions feel all the more real.

Remember the term conspiracy theory was created to discredit true alternative theories.
