Facebook stats for SA: the truth

caught facebook by surprise? less than 20% of the population in south Africa even accesses the internet. seriously doubt they care about how many registered users they have from south Africa considering there is no comment from the company. World Wide Worx is just trying to justify it's existence.

The anomaly occurred because Facebook was culling accounts that were duplicates, fake, or used for spamming, Goldstuck explained.

This was my opinion from the get go. I think most of these social online site members numbers are over exaggerated due to one person having multiple accounts on the sites.

It's like Bipolar online

Facebook being blind-sided by this?

Really?

They have the data, they know whats going on. If they chose not to link and integrate the data from their various data sources and make it available through their Ad platform, it doesn't mean they don't know exactly whats going on.

Been thinking about leaving myself. Always used to love Facebook but these days the momentum behind all the ads and crap, the fact that it lies by showing "likes" that never happened while pushing all kinds of info on the news feed relating to stuff where I have no idea why it's there... it's all just too *blegh*, and you can't even actively manage most of this crap anymore.

Facebook has just become way too big for its own shoes and I'm starting to pick up that others to are getting suck of it.

In fairness, while the story grew from "hey look at this massive decline SocialBakers shows for Facebook" to "OMG Facebook has lost a MILLION users in SA", Arthur stuck out his neck and said it wasn't so, standing by their research.

The comment from SocialBakers is (AFAIK) the first confirmation he's received of this so far, yet he stuck to his guns.

There may also be comment from Facebook, I'm just waiting on them to confirm it.

Well Goldstuck does say that Facebook has other data they use internally, so yes they do know what's going on. But for advertisers that only use their ad planning tool a trend like this doesn't look good.

I just came to read the comments.....boooooring article...

Luckily for you I don't take comments like this personally. Otherwise my beard would have to go Chuck Norris on you.

The reason this growth isn’t reflected in the data that is publicly available, Goldstuck explained, is because Facebook’s mobile sign-up doesn’t require users to specify a location for them to join.
Is this person for real? You get the country data from the IP ranges used NOT where the users indicate they're from.

From what I understand, mobile sign-ups cannot be traced?
Even if they can, then have you considered the massive black market for cell phones? I don't have statistics but cell phone theft is not a myth ...

Arthur you're not talking sense. First why can't mobile usage be traced? Facebook don't release stats. Social bakers don't track sign ups but active usage that they get from Facebook's Ad tool. What has cellphone theft have to do with Facebook usage?

Hey, don't miss-quote me! I never said "black markHet" ...

"black market" not "black markHet". What is a black markHet?
OK Mr Goldstuck I asked two simple questions that you still haven't answered but nit pick a quote. Do you not hold yourself accountable?
1. what has the black market have to do with decrease in facebook usage?
2. why do you say "Facebook’s mobile sign-up doesn’t require users to specify a location for them to join." results in a shortage. Neither does the desktop which doesn't matter since socialbaker do not use registrations but active users for their criteria.

you pretty much did..

Fair enough.

MY COMMENT: I was/am under the impression that mobile location is not that easy to trace. However, I acknowledge the fact that this is what I was told in 2009 when I got my 1st BB. Then someone else said that they could trace it by batch number. In my mind, I'm thinking that batches of phones are released to different countries. Knowing how things work in Africa, I'm sure a lot of the phones meant for the SA market, ends up in Timbuktu or Uganda. Also, a lot of cell phones are stolen and some people, thinking that could never happen to them, are always logged into their FB account. Suddenly they wake-up and realise the thief can now access his or her FB page.

I don't have statistics and frankly, I don't really care about the statistics we are fed by major corporations. I think it was Einstein who said that statistics can be fudged but facts will always be facts ... he said it more eloquently but I think you get my drift.
