It doesn’t need light, but try having your face against a pillow or half under a duvet?

As for the last bit, you don’t need to be directly in front of it, but you need to be within its field of view. I can (and often do) use my phone flat on my desk while multitasking. Approximately 45 degree angle. I can see it, it can’t see me.
That’s what I meant I use mine in bed all the time.

The desk factor makes more sense if you operate like that. I simply can’t use a device on a flat surface like that.

I think it would be useful. Either under screen or integrated into the power button.

Lately, FaceID sometimes doesn’t recognise my face when I’m wearing my sunglasses, where it never had that problem in the past, across many iOS versions and devices.

Don’t know if it’s perhaps iOS 18 related.

I guess i could try rescanning my face or set up that “Alternative appearance” feature, but as I say, it never used to be a problem in the past.

And forget about unlocking your phone when it’s laying on the desk next to you while working on the computer. You either have to pick it up or stretch your neck like a giraffe and look down to get it more “square” or head on to the camera.

So in those instances I would welcome TouchID

Just use iPhone mirroring.

I voted both because having the choice is good and having TouchID available poses no disadvantages for FaceID.

FaceID is the most convenient of the two (I still have TouchID on the iPad and Mac of course) but there are definitely occasions when it would be convenient to have the TouchID available.

Moving from a notch phone to a Dynamic Island phone it feels like the FaceID focus is wider…maybe for not being shadowed as much.

Or maybe the sensors are just different/better because I certainly feel using it flat on a desk like many complain about is much less an issue in my bit of testing.
